they are ratios of different sides of a right triangle.
sin of an angle = side opposite the angle/hypotenuse
cos = adjacent side/hypotenuse
tan = opposite side/adjacent side

i was terrible in math! all i remember is that they are called Sine, Cosine and Tangent. Thay are just the length of one side divided by another in a right triangle.
