Another party timing question - suggestions needed (added another ??)
So miki's 3rd b-day is on a Saturday this year. We are having a company come to do a petting zoo, pony rides, paint a horseshoe and paint the pony (where they let the kids paint the pony with washable paint)
anyway, she said it would take about 2 1/2 hours to do all of these activities. I am trying to figure out what time to start the party....we will either BBQ or order pizzza, not sure yet (any suggestions on which would be better for food????)
would you do the party from 2-6 and serve food at 4:30 (giving the kids some time to do the activities BEFORE we eat) or would you do it from 12-4 and eat first, then play, then cake????
NEW QUESTION
Now, if I was going to do it from 2-6, is it okay to plan to eat at 4pm or is this too early. I was thinking 4 so that we could eat, open presents, then do the cake to be done by 6
maybe 3-7 would be better, eat at 5, but then I worry about losing daylight....hmmm, help !!!

Me too.
And I'd order pizza. We did for DS' party last year and it was the best thing. With BBQing someone (DH) has to be on the grill and it isn't fun, with pizza, its ready and minimal clean up

ITA.... this way you and DH can enjoy the party and not be standing in front of the grill the whole time. Plus, everyone can eat at the same time instead of having to wait and ask what pple what they want... hamburger or hotdog, with/out cheese, etc. Gets too much

yup, I know it sounds wacky but the kids will love it , they "dress" the pony up with a nice saddle and some bow and let the kids paint her (or him)

2-6 with pizza.
Honestly, at that age I am not a fan of the birthday child opening gifts during the party. I think it just gets too nutty with that many toddlers, so personally I wouldn't allocate any time to that. I would let the birthday girl enjoy her gifts later.

so when would you do dinner? She has always opened her gifts at her parties, I doubt she will want to wait, I guess we can see how it goes, maybe save that for last. I thought guests liked to see their gifts being opened, is this not "the norm" anymore

Re: Another party timing question - suggestions needed (added another ??)
dinner like 4:30-5?
Most of the recent parties we have been to have been at places (HopNBop, White Post), so opening gifts isn't an issue. The one recent house party, the toddlers were just getting ansy, all the kids wanted to help, it was just nutty! Maybe that is half the fun though, so maybe I'm strange .
