another question for teachers
can anyone either post or FM me info on how your district handles gifted children. are there gifted or enrichment programs, pull outs, push ins, after school only programs? any info would be appreciated. i am fighting my school board for any type of enrichment for my son who has an IQ of 145 and is in 3rd grade doing what i consider 1st grade work! example: spellling word this week WHY. seriously! tia!

Re: another question for teachers
We have an after school enrichment type program for grades 3-8. We also try to work within the classroom to differentiate. I have worked with parents of exceptional children that I have given more challenging work to. Keep in mind, if it is a public school, the teacher still has to cover curriculum with kids of all levels.

that's exactly why i dont think that differentiating instruction is enough! i mean you are only one teacher how can you be expected to one on one personalize each child's education. there has to be another way!

Thanks for that support..you are right. I try my best to give "above and beyond" type stuff to those kids, while still keeping the work relevant and not just extra work for the sake of extra work. It sounds like there are some opportunities out there for extra programs outside of the school. Maybe check your area and talk with your child's teacher for ideas...

Re: another question for teachers
The district I live in has a gifted program within the schools, which starts in 3rd grade. The students meet throughout the school day, and work on challenging, advanced projects.
My sister (in Queens) was just told last week that they should strongly consider a gifted program for my niece. She just started kindergarten,is reading at 3rd gr level, and advanced in all areas. I told my sis and BIL to get her IQ tested, Im sure she feels like shes a teacher to many of her peers. SHe's just at another level. (sometimes my heart breaks when she tells her 7yr old sister how to do her hw ) - the 7yr old is my Goddaughter Im not sure how theyre going to pursue this.
Kristi - I agree that there has to be more than differentiating the curriculum.. We had a whole discussion about this in a grad G&T class. I think it's one of those things that I can speak more about with experience. It's hard for me to say how I feel about it right now, but I will def say it should go beyond just a differentiated curriculum. There should be a separate program to provide enrichment and satisfy the child's ambition to learn more and challenge them at all levels. although I dont feel it should affect their lives so as to alienate them socially from their peers, etc.

i totally agree. i don't want to allienate him from his peers. it is hard enough for him to relate to them as it is with his aspergers disorder. but he is so bored in school!

Re: another question for teachers
I am a middle school teacher and I will be honest and say I am not too familiar with our G&T program but this is the information posted about it on the district website
The MAGNET program is designed to bring gifted students together to promote higher level thinking skills while nurturing creative problem solving ability. The interdisciplinary program is designed to coordinate and extend the regular classroom curriculum. MAGNET is a stimulating enrichment program for students identified by a comprehensive selection process. The program, housed at ****** Elementary School, services the District’s elementary students in grades three through six. The program operates on a six-day cycle.
I teach accelerated courses at the middle school level and I know that most of my accelerated students were in this program.
