another sleep question - night terrors
Hi all - I am hoping someone can help me. For the past month or so Jake has been waking up at all times throught the night crying. I will go into his room, rub his back and tell him to go back to sleep, which he usually does. Then maybe 1/2 hour to 1 hour later it happens again. I am exhausted - mind you I am also 7 months pregnant. Do you think this could be night terrors - he doesn't scream at the top of his lungs - just wimpers. I am going nuts with this and I mess my sleep. Last night I finally lost it and yelled at him, which of course made things worse. Does anyone know what I can do to stop this.
thanks.

Re: another sleep question - night terrors
Andrew was doing the same thing for awhile. I was always the one getting up to go to his room to soothe him, but he would just go back to sleep.
One night he was crying, and i was so exhausted, I nudged DH to go into him. Before he got up, Andrew had quieted down. How long do you let him cry before going in? If you can wait like 2 minutes, will he go back to sleep on his own!
I hope you can get some sleep in your house!

Re: another sleep question - night terrors
This has been happening occasionally in our house too, but I wouldn't call it 'terrors' cause he doesn't seem that terrified KWIM?
Most of the time I wait it out because it sounds like he is having a dream or talking in his sleep, confused and most of the time he goes back on his own.
But like the other night I could hear him at his door asking for "Diesel" one of his trains and not really making any sense saying he was scared. I just put him back in bed and in a few minutes he was asleep.
He also has complained about his foot hurting and woke up wimpering, I swear its growing pains - the Dr thinks I'm nuts.
I have defintely noticed he is starting to dream more or remember them somehow because he does wake up confused, maybe thats it?

Gianna has been waking up in the middle of the night screaming atleast 4 times a night. I have no idea what to do either, she has slept through the night since she is 7 weeks old and now all of a sudden I feel like I have a newborn again. It is also taking her about 2 hours to fall asleep at night and she screams for the 2 hours

Re: another sleep question - night terrors
My DD is 2 and has been waking up recently screaming. She can easily be soothed back to sleep within a few minutes though. I think it definitely is nightmares because a few times she has told me that a bug was on her finger or she saw a worm ect... other times she is totally dilusional asking for lollipops or marshmallows! I am hoping it is a phase that ends soon

Re: another sleep question - night terrors
Actually, it sounds like nightmares. Jesse has had a few night terrors and they are very scary. The more you try to soothe them, the worse they get. And they are asleep the entire time, even if they look awake (eyes open). Very odd. We were told to just let it take it's course and make sure he can't hurt himself, and that he won't remember it in the morning.
If you can soothe him back to sleep, it's probably just a nightmare or he woke up and realized you weren't there. If he ever has a night terror, and I hope he doesn't, you will definitely know the difference.

Re: another sleep question - night terrors
DS has been doing this for awhile he will be sleeping and wake up wimpering or screaming. I usually wait it out because he doesn't fully wake up and puts himself back to sleep but if I go in there he wakes up more and takes longer to go back down. I wish I could stop them too but I don't see how- they are dreams I think

Re: another sleep question - night terrors
it does not sound like night terrors. Ryan had them, they are horrible. He would wake up screaming, nothing would soothe him, he would flail his arms and legs, roll from front to back, stand up, throw himself on the floor. And there was nothing we could do to soothe him.
Baby einstein music was the only thing that ever worked to calm him down even a little.

QUOTE]
This is what I was going to say. I suffered TERRIBLY as a child from night terrors. You cannot wake a child from a night terror. It was so bad that I was on sleeping pills as a small child. It turned out that it was a result from food allergies. This is actually not an uncommon manifestation of food allergies. So, I think it's probably just nightmares, but for anyone who has a child with night terrors, definitely look into food allergies if nothing else works. As soon as they found out I was allergic to peanuts, my night terrors disappeared.
