another spinoff to workers in house....
alone. What do those of you that won't leave them think they'll do? We have a safe in our house that our true valuables are in. Our office & bedroom doors both have keyed locks, which I guess I could lock. I'm know I'd put away any jewelry & important papers & stuff. Do you guys think they go through panty drawers or something? I'm confused, because I'd never hire someone to do signifigant work ON my house that I didn't trust to be IN my house. Its way too important of a job. Not all tradesmen are dirtbags, hopefully we all hire licensed & insured companies that would be responsible if your home was damaged or robbed. I just don't feel like I have anything that private or special that I need to watch over. My DH has been a contractor for 20 years & he's never had a customer on a job that lasted more than a few days that didn't give him the keys & go to work. He has even had people go away while he's working so they don't have to live through the mess. I think he'd be insulted if his customers felt differently. None of his workers are ever left unsupervised on a job though, so maybe that's part of it.

Re: another spinoff to workers in house....
My FIL is in the business and he's had customers tell him all sorts of horror stories about what all sorts of people have done... everything from contractors to cleaning ladies to baby sitters.
1. Eaten food
2. Stolen clothes, jewelry (you have to be pretty stupid to leave it out though) and even toilet paper
3. Stolen tools, etc. from the garage and shed
4. Broken fragile items when they weren't even supposed to or needed to be in that particular room.
5. Left dirty footprints throughout rooms they weren't supposed to be in.
6. Used the family's personal computers.
7. Gone through the mail.
That's all I can remember right now.
Most are very professional out there but there are some very shady people as well.
That's why it's so important to hire based on personal recommendation and make sure whoever owns the company runs through background checks on all workers.

Re: another spinoff to workers in house....
I responded the other post that i always leave people alone in my house. i cant imagine a bunch of carpenters going thru my drawers. what would they want to see? And like you said - I put the few valuables i have away. what are they going to do? steal my china? doubtful.
I never really understood not trusting people either but then again i have never had a bad experience.

Okay, if my contractor steals my toilet paper then I feel bad enough for his situation that he can have it.....

1- if you're that hungry, eat it. I'd never not leave a snack & drinks for workers anyway
2-I can say with certainty, nobody would steal our clothes, but if they did I'd put a claim in to the company's insurance policy
3-most homeowners don't have tools worth stealing, if they did they'd probably be DIYers, but again that would be an insurance issue
4-you're fired & I'm filing a claim with your insurance company & making a complaint with consumer affairs
5-see #4
6-all of our computers are locked when we are not home in case our house gets robbed while we are out.
7-I can sort of understand this one because it would be hard to tell if it even happened but I think most people could take precautions to avoid this, like locking your file cabinet and/or office door.
I'm the type of person that leaves EVERYTHING in my car when it gets serviced, I know the guy. He pays a lot of money for insurance...if his guys were theives he'd be out of business. I think I'd feel the same about men reconstructing my home.

Re: another spinoff to workers in house....
also on the flip side of this...there are lots of people that SHOULD put stuff away that don't. DH has moved furniture in rooms they KNEW he was working on to find crazy sex toys under the bed. He once found what he called a pillowcase of pot in a drop ceiling in the basement that they KNEW he was running new wires through. there is way more, but I'll spare you all the rest.
