Officials reopen Tobay Beach after bomb scare


(07/09/05) MASSAPEQUA - Tobay Beach was reopened Saturday after a bomb scare earlier in the week.


Bomb squad investigators sifted through sand, where they had already disabled the second of two pipe bombs found Thursday off Tobay. An authority with the Nassau Arson Bomb Squad says they plan to test what they have already found and look to see if any forensic evidence was left on either device.


According to authorities, the first bomb was found by an unsuspecting lifeguard and the second by divers near a shipwreck approximately 1,000 feet from shore. Divers completed a thorough sweep of the vessel and believe there is nothing else in the waters. However, because of murky waters and poor visibility they closed off a 600-foot portion of the waterfront until they can complete another sweep.


The next sweep will be scheduled when weather officials believe the ocean waters are calm.

It was in the paper a couple of times last week. Apparently, some lifeguard noticed the first bomb while snorkeling over a wreck and they went in and searched for two days and found a second one. They are pipe bombs and they were sent to Washington to be tested.

As if they are going to catch the person who planted them
