Antibiotic causing diaper rash?
DS was sick for the first time ever last week (he's just over a year old) and he was put on Zithromax. Ever since he has had diaper rash. He hads NEVER had it before. He is done with the meds now, but still has the rash and it's getting really bad. TOnight he was crying because of it and it broke my heart. I've tried desitin and a few others & nothing is helping SO 2 questions. Is the meds causin this? & WHat should I put on him to give him some relief? TIA fror any help.

Re: Antibiotic causing diaper rash?
My DD was on the same antibiotic and the same thing happened to her. She ended up with a fungal rash and had to be prescribed Vusion ointment. Within hours after putting it on the rash was so much better. You should probably call your ped to have them check the rash first.

Re: Antibiotic causing diaper rash?
Sounds like a yeast infection. Try Lotrimin in addition to your regular diaper cream.

Put Powder and Triple Paste and do not over clean when changing. If it is just pee, do not wipe too much. Just add more.

Re: Antibiotic causing diaper rash?
Yup the antibiotics are probably the culprit. Antibiotics kill ALL bacteria in the body good and bad which allows yeast to overpopulate. This is why is so important to take a pro-biotic when on antibiotics to recolonize the body with good bacteria.
We dealt with a HORRIBLE diaper Yeast infection with Alexa for 5 weeks until we finally got the right system.
The Dr will probably prescribe Nystatin ointment to be used 3 X a day. You need to use another diaper cream ( We use Burts bees) ON TOP of the Nystatin to keep the medication in and make a moisture barrier on the skin.
Make sure YOU FINISH the ointment even if the rash is gone.... I can and most likely WILL come back!!!! Yeast can still be present even if you don't see it.
After a bath I would keep Alexa's diaper off for about 1/2 and hour and feed her to "air her out".
Change the diaper every time you know he is dirty and at least every 2-3 hours.... Yeast Breeds on moisture and warmth.
It wasn't until we started her on an oral probiotic (with at least 3 live cultures) that the yeast really went away. It literally cleared up in uner 48 hours!!!!
You have to be VERY careful with a yeast rash because they can develop open sores that can become bacterial infections and then infect their blood and they can get septic (blood infection)
FM if you have any questions!
Hope he feels better soon!!!

Re: Antibiotic causing diaper rash?
Thank you for the responses. The ped said it is prob a yeast infection & he told me to try lotriman. I gave him & bath, let him dry out a bit & put it on before his bed time diaper. I hope it looks better in the morning. Looks so painful!
