Any Accountants here - I have a tax question
So last year was my first married year, so my question is - do I need to file WITH my DH? DH and his dad own their own business, so they always get an extension for their taxes and it is always a big ordeal, so I really don't want to file with him!
Is there any way for me to file without waiting for him?

yes, you just have to check "married filing seperately" on each of your 1040's

Re: Any Accountants here - I have a tax question
but if you do that - then you are aren't filling jointly- and for us it made more sense from a tax paying point of view to fill jointly
Jake is 1099- so he always files an extension also- so this year I have to file one too- but it worked out b/c he owes less b/c of my refund
but this year he promised me we could file on time

You can file married filing seperate, but it is not always better to do this, you lose out on some credits this way.

Yes, I am planning on doing married filing separate and married filing joint and seeing what the difference is before we actually file the return

we had our accountant do both ways- jointly worked better for us- well for Jake- he owed less this way
and it's all our money- so the less he owed the better for both of us

That may not be the best option for you. If your DH itemizes then you have to as well which may mean losing your standard deduction and visa versa. Also, MFS have much lower thresholds and lower phaseouts that may not be to your benefit.

99% of the time it's better to file married jointly than married separately. It will probably benefit you to just wait and file with him.

We did the same thing. Our accountant did it both ways and then we went with the way that saved us more money.

I guess I'll have my accountant do the same thing.
