Any advice on explaining the birth process to a young child?
We are expecting our 3rd baby in a little less than 2 months. Our boys are 4 and 2. Our 4yo very much understands that there is a baby in mommy's belly and the baby will come out when he/she is ready and will then be part of our family. He has a very curious mind and has been asking a lot of questions recently about how the baby will come out. I really believe in being as honest with children as possible, but I also don't believe a 4yo needs to know all the gory details of childbirth. When I try to answer his questions somewhat vaguely, he presses me for more details. During our latest conversation a few days ago, we got to the point that he knows the baby comes out of a hole between my legs and the doctor helps him or her get out. I know it's going to come up again. Any tips?

What's gory? Say baby is in your uterus. Your uterus connects to a hole that only girls have. That hole is how the baby comes out.

Re: Any advice on explaining the birth process to a young child?
My girls were 5 and 3.5 when their little brother was born. I am no help...I had all c-sections and so I said that the doctor takes the baby out and there is a curtain up so I can't see what goes on on the other side. Then when they got older I said that they were cut out from my tummy but that it didn't hurt since I had medicine. It was only about a month or two ago (they are 8 and almost 7 now) that I revealed how most babies come out. They were like ...
Anyway, I think you've already told all a 4 year old really needs to know. That's it. Unless you're planning a demonstration.

I just said that the baby comes out of a special place that only girls have.
Although, prior to that my son asked if the baby would come out of my tushie! lol

The problem is that he really wants to understand everything, and that answer is not enough for him. So he presses me for more details.

Lol! That's pretty much all there is... but for a detailed explanation:
try "How you were born" by Joanna Cole. It's a "Reading Rainbow book". Another option is to go to the babycenter website & show him some pictures of baby developing & the baby coming out of the uterus. Here is the birth process:
http://www.babycenter.com/2_inside-pregnancy-labor-and-birth_3658872.bc
I like scientific explanations better than the rest: they make sense & the kid "gets" it. When I was changing a tampon in a public restroom, my DS (3) asked me what my period was for... the questions never stop. I'm sure the rest of the people in the restroom had a story to tell their family after that!
Remember, the next logical question is "how did the baby get there?".

There is a video online that does a realistic computer animation of how a baby grows in the belly and ends with a vaginal birth. No gore. Take a look at it and if you think it's appropriate, you could show it to your son. A picture is worth 1000 words.

My 5 year old was obsessed with this video lol
My daughter is also inquisitive and I explained it to her. After she said that must have been the worst day of your life! haha
