Re: Any eat Mussels while pregnant???
I just talked to my Ob about this last week. I love shellfish and with the holidays coming I needed clarification. We are italian and eat all seafoods on Christmas Eve. I was disappointed to hear that we are NOT supposed to eat clams, mussels, oysters, etc as they can carry bacteria and whatnot. Boooo

If I get fondue and there is wine in it, I usually ask them to subsitute it with something else...and honestly, it tastes just as good.
We went to waterzooi on saturday for the first time and it was delicious! We got the sweet potato gnocchi app, and, the goat cheese was pasteurized so I was quite happy! (Yeah, I asked cause I am a bit psycho this time...)

Re: Any eat Mussels while pregnant???
I know!! Me too! I always look forward to the Christmas Eve Feast He said I can have things like shrimp, fried calamari, I think scallops, but none of what I really wanted. I usually love shrimp but honestly yesterday I was eating something and came across a shrimp and it nauseated me immediately! Ahhh the joys of pregnancy!! Sorry but I too feel your pain. I would really like a glass of Sangria right about now too and I'm not even really a drinker. Go figure

Re: Any eat Mussels while pregnant??? OK another food question added!?
I would probably still eat them. But that's just me.
I love shellfish - and if it's steamed I don't see any reason not to.
With fondue - as long as you cook up the food you are eating, no reason not to eat it. But I'm not one of those overly cautious people with food. I eat what I want, within reason & moderation.

Re: Any eat Mussels while pregnant??? OK another food question added!?
i'm staying away from it all...it's for piece of mind really - that way if god forbid there is something wrong i won't blame myself and say what if it's b/c i drank to much caffeine, or what if i ingested too much mercury in my food, etc.
i know my mom ate all that stuff when she was pregnant with me but the ocean was a lot cleaner 20-30 years ago than it is now...
i wouldn't...
i am doing christmas eve again and i make it all - i am still going to make it this year -i'm not going to punish everyone else but i'll make baked ziti or something like that for myself - it shouldn't be too bad since i don't really have much of an appetite...
although i have been craving tuna like crazy! won't eat it though...

Shellfish is on several approved lists and they just list a certain amount you are not to exceed for the week.
I would go ahead and eat them! I would also eat the fondue.

Re: Any eat Mussels while pregnant??? OK another food question added!?
I read that as long as the mussels are steamed and opened all the way you can go ahead and eat them. I've had a few here and there throughout the pregnancy. As for the Fondue from my understanding the wine burns out and it is a very unsubstantial amount in the first place, even less than one glass that you can technically have every once in a blue moon.

Re: Any eat Mussels while pregnant??? OK another food question added!?
I've eaten mussels, crabs, and clams all with the OK from my doctor.
I don't see the issue as long as they are cooked. Most shellfish has lower mercury levels than other types of fish because they aren't deep water animals (minus certian crabs and lobsters).
As for the fondue wine is cooked off during cooking the same way vodka is in vodka sauce. You can ask them to sub out the wine though which may be even more comforting.

Re: Any eat Mussels while pregnant??? OK another food question added!?
um, I ONLY eat mussels when I'm pregnant.
2 kids, no mussel issues... my almost 3 year old loves them (hence the reason I eat them pregnant - I don't like them much myself but she loved them from the womb.)
