Any HR people out there?

There was recently a promotion available in my department. I applied, as well as 2 others in the department. Based on what I know about the background of the 2 other candidates, I believe that I was most qualified for the position. 2 of us were women. I've worked there fulltime for the past 3 years, the other woman has worked there over 6 years, part-time. The man has worked there for 10 months, per diem (usually scheduled 1 day per week whether we needed him or not). As you can guess, the position went to him. I should add that he is very close friends with the administrator of the building, and is friends with my new director (he was just promoted but hasn't officially started in his new position yet). The decision was made by my "new" director, and I feel also by the administrator, not by HR -- they had nothing to do with the interview process at all.

Is there any way for me to find out if the guy who got the job is as qualified as I am? Who would I go to to contest, or to voice my concern/opinion about the decision that was made? It really just seems like there is no advancement potential for women in this department, and it is very clear that the administrator is bringing in all of his cronies rather than hiring or promoting as qualified, if not more qualified existing employees.

There is more to this story, of course, which I can get into later if you need more info. I just want to know if there is anywhere for me to turn, rather than the help wanted ads.

TIA

ETA: is it even worth speaking to somebody in my HR dept about this?

That stinks.

Yes -- ask for feedback about YOU, your interview, your qualifications, what you could have done differently, what you can do to position yourself for the next opportunity etc. Keep the focus on you as much as you possibly can.

For the gender issue, you may want to look around and start counting; there are no women supervisors out of x# of supervisors and x# of non-supervisors.

Re: Any HR people out there?

So when you apply for an internal position you don't have to interview for it? They gave it to him and didn't tell the other applicants why they didn't get it? At my job we interview all internal applicants and then provide feedback to the candidates who were not selected. I would ask to (calmly Chat Icon ) speak to the HR manager and just say you wanted to know why you were not selected and what you need to do in the future etc...

I would ask for feedback on why you were unsuccessful for the job. Be very careful not to go in with any accusations until you have the full information, you don't want them to think that you have a problem with this until you find out all the facts
