Any libraries that allow non-members to go to their programs? Or any FREE programs out there?
My library requires that both the adult and child have a library card to do their programs. I don't think a 7 month old needs a library card, and I want his first card to be a special thing for him.
So i am looking for other libraries that would allow outsiders to use their programs... I assume I can't get a card outside my district?
Or any community programs that might be free... I am not even sure how to find them.
Thanks for any help

He won't even know that he has a card. You don't have to use it to take out books. Just use it for registration.

I agree - register him...you can always do a pseudo library card registration when he is older. Any librarian would accommodate that.
My library sometimes allows non-residents (Harborfields)

My library requires a card for the child - but it's not an official library card. Since you register for classes based on the baby's DOB, they need something official with this info on it.
Would the kind of card make a difference for you?

While my library (plainedge) requires a card - you need the code to register the child - they do allow non-residents to register if there are spots open after residents register. I do not know how they register non-residents though.
My DS got a card at a year old and he has no idea.

Yeah if he couldn't check books out with it. That is why i find it absurd. I will check and see what kind of card it is.

Outside libraries usually put you on a waiting list. If the programs are great at your library, then is the card really that big of a deal?

Re: Any libraries that allow non-members to go to their programs? Or any FREE programs out there?
Just FYI the libraries that require cards usually do it because their program registration process is done using an online/computer system & the barcode on the card is needed to save the child's place & to verify that the program is age appropriate. There is no expectation that this child will be checking out their own books...Also, like a previous poster mentioned, space is usually very limited for children's programs so registration for out of district patrons is usually held a few days after residents can register. At the libraries that I both work at & attend, the classes fill up quickly & non-residents very rarely make it into the programs. I hope that you have luck though

My library only requires the adult to have a card.. They also take non-members but there is a different registration. Check out the local libraries online..

Re: Any libraries that allow non-members to go to their programs? Or any FREE programs out there?
Our library does not require a card and I can tell you that we went to other local Nassau libraries and I would just call and ask..tell them you're a nonresident..some put you on a waitlist and you have to just show up (Farmingdale, ie.) and some have a later reg. date for nonresidents (ie. Plainview, Syosset)...keep your eyes open for Play Hooray programs..they are GREAT and they do what I call the "library circuit"...as you go to these things, you'll meet other moms and you can swap info. and go to more classes..don't be discouraged and if you like your library, see what the reason is for the card and see if you can be made happy and go to classes!

Cold Spring Harbor says they don't but my MIL takes DS on Thursdays to the toddler time class
Huntington- we go to class on Saturdays and they check that our names are on the list and you have to register for the class with your card, so they def. check but I've been to cold spring harbor too and they haven't. You just go around the time of the class and when they go to round everyone up, just follow haha
shhhh lol
