Any mommies have kiddies that were referred to a neurologist due to low muscle tone?
So scared and upset. DD has been getting pt and ot since a few months initially due to torticolis. DD has done everything late: standing, crawling etc. Our pt referred us to an orthopedist due to DD still not walking unassisted. She is 19 months. She guessed DD would need orthodics at most. Well, the orthopedist thinks it is more of a neurological issue.Upon hearing this, I burst into tears. I couldn't help but flashing back to our sons diagnosis of a heart defect. I I was so upset.I asked him what he thought might be wrong and he was very vague. I didn't know if he was that way due to not wanting to scare me or not willing to speculate before any tests are done. He may just want to err on the side of caution and want everything ruled out first.
I have done my own research and hypotonia seems to be the most common diagnosis. It is basically low muscle tone with no known reason. Extensive pt is the most common course of action. Julia is doing well cognitively and socially, as well as showing improvements with her fine motor. I had no reason to think anything was seriously wrong. I am at a loss. Any btdt's?

Re: Any mommis have kiddies that were referred to neurologit due to low muscle tone?
My best friends son had a pretty bad case of hypotonia. Not diagnosed until he was 20 months old. He crawled late, didn't start to walk until 17 months. Was walking good at 20 months. Couldn't run until almost 2.5. He had torticolis too. The pedi she was using was not good and said he was a late bloomer. When she switched pedi's, he was diagnosed and started p/t. He is now 6 and can do anything...I was born with CP and it was diagnosed when I was about 18 months old. I walked early though. It affected my legs and I had weakness in them. My parents got me P/T and enrolled me in dance class to strengthen my muscles. It didn't really impede my ability to do anything growing up! A neurologist will run some tests and get down to the root of the problem..

I cannot tell you about the reasons for it but DS has low tone. Very weak core muscles.
I have enrolled him in horseback riding since last July. His abs are so much stronger so is his back. he can now do "scissors" type excercise with his legs laying supine (on his back).
4 months ago we enrolled him also in swimming. He has OT for over 2 years now and PT over 1 year.
Yesterday for the 1st time he was able to climb those huge bouncers at White Post Farm to go all the way to the top and slide down.
He will be 4 in a few weeks.
He has become so much stronger.
Don't lose hope!

Thanks ladies. We already knew she did have low muscle tone but it just scares me she wil need to see a neuro now for a whole battery of tests. I couldn't help but think of the worst case scenario.

She may not need a battery of tests at all...
The neuro may do some very basic things, in office, and decide that it is nothing more than low muscle tone....
I am low tone...
As is my son...
My daughter is too...and, the funny with that is, they think she is low tone b/c of me not b/c of her other issues.
Im sure she is going to be just fine.
Please feel free to FM me....

Re: Any mommies have kiddies that were referred to a neurologist due to low muscle tone?
Daughter, Donna (09 Bride), was diagnosed with benign congenital hypotonia, when she did not begin walking on time. They put her in a Thomas heel shoe, and said that she would have to be careful, in later yrs. in gym class, as far as navigating the different pieces of equipment, ie, the horse, the buck, and jumping over them. However, we had special prayer for her, and it disappeared. She even became a cheerleader!!!! And, since she had to wear those ugly shoes, she developed quite a thing for pretty shoes !!!!! THE LORD can and does answer prayer!!! Mary

Thanks Mary that is a touching story. I have been reading a lot about benign congenital hypotonia and its charc are similar to my daughters issues.

Re: Any mommies have kiddies that were referred to a neurologist due to low muscle tone?
Thank you ladies for all the support and feedback. And Heather, I can relate as I believe I am low toned as well. It was just not diagnosed in my day, I think my parents figured I was unathletic or just lazy.

Any mommies have kiddies that were referred to a neurologist due to low muscle tone?
Hi there, I know this is an old posting but hopeing someone will see this & help me. My son is almost 10 months. He is also low tone. He can sit for about 20 seconds. We have been getting E/I since he was about 2 months because of sever torticollis. We have seen tremendous improvemnt but just seems slower then what I would have hoped. My other son (I have twins) is about to crawl this week. We have never gone to a neuro yet. What kind of tests do they do?

Hi, I don't know the answer to your post but it has me thinking. I have one twin who is way ahead of his brother. I know I shouldn't compare them and we always say they do things at their own pace.
They are 9 months and both crawling. One crawls on hands and knees and zooms across the floor, sits up unassisted, and is trying to pull himself to stand. His brother crawls army style with belly on the floor. He can sit up because I've sat behind him, but only does it for a few seconds and flops over. Is not trying to stand or anything like that.
We keep saying he'll do it when he's ready. He crawled after his brother and is a very laid back baby whereas his brother is not. Now I'm getting worried. Am I unnecessarily worrying? They are only 9 months but if there is an issue, sooner is always better an finding out later. Thoughts?

Dolphins, Have you ever had your little guy evaluated by early intervention? My guy try to pull himself up also, but there is no strength there. My guy is doing the army crawl also.
