Any Mount Saint Mary University Alumni here?
In emmitsberg Maryland?
We are visiting this school with my stepdaughter this weekend and just thought I'd ask if anyone here had experience with it.

Re: Any Mount Saint Mary University Alumni here?
Mt. St. Mary's (Mt. St. Mary is in NY) was a school I checked out and was the only school I didn't even stay for the tour. Just know it's a very Catholic (there's a seminary there) and VERY conservative school. There was a statue dedicated to "victims of abortion" on the campus--I took one look at it and told my parents I wanted to leave (I am very pro choice). There are priests (or men becoming priests?) on campus. It's also on a main highway if I remember correctly.
Not that there's anything wrong with any of this, but I was under a different impression when I decided to look there. This was before the internet--if I could have seen the website back then, I wouldn't have bothered. It just has to be the right kind of student, and I was NOT that student.
I know you asked for alumni, but my visit there is still memorable (but not in a positive way) to me.
Best of luck to your stepdaughter with her search.

Thanks for the reply. Mount Saint Mary University is in Maryland, I know there is a college somewhere in NY. Its the 2nd oldest catholic university in the US and I'm pretty suprised she has a school with such religious influence on her list. They claim its not "in your face", we shall see when we get there. I will not be thrilled if there are anti-abortion shrines

it is hard to tell with religious schools until you go there. My family never went to church outside of what was required to make our sacraments & we went to public school , but we both ended up at Catholic universities, and my brother's seemed barely Catholic & mine was more so, but not in an oppressive way.
good luck!

It's mount St. Mary's in emmitsburg md. I am an alumni. Loved it there but it is very small although growing. It is kind of in the middle of no where though, They don't push religion on you. But you do take two semesters of religion type classes. Any more questions would be happy to help

We are going to visit Gettysberg as well, is it realistic for students to get to gettysberg from the campus?

Sorry to hijack but I went to Mt St Mary's in Newburgh and I have no idea what statue you are refering to. There is also no Seminary on campus. There is a grammar school on campus. They also didn't push religion at all. Unless things have changed since I graduated.
Good luck to you SD. I wanted to go to school in the MD area but it was out of the cards for me.

Re: Any Mount Saint Mary University Alumni here?
I am an alumni and loved Mount St Marys. I made some amazing friends who I still have today and got a good education. There were lots of opportunities to get involved and I ended up w/ a good job after graduation.
Religion was not "pushed" in day to day life. It was there if a student wants to participate, but other than the 2 required religion classes that are part of the core curriculum you could take part in as much or as little as you liked. In fact, there were even options w/ the two classes you have to take. For ex - one of my closest friends was not Catholic. I know one of the two she took was "world religion" where they learned about all diff religions.
Gettysburg is only about 20 mins away. Easy to get to and we went there when I was a student. One of my friends actually dated a guy at Gettysburg freshman year. Ski Liberty is close if she skies or snowboards. It's a small slope, but is fun in the wintertime and they have student rates. Frederick MD is about a half hour away -- went there for the mall and for some nicer restaurants. Also went to Balto and DC sometimes too.
Emmitsburg is a small town and it is a small school, so she will have to like that in order to like the school.
Also, FYI -- I graduated over 10 years ago. Just letting you know it has been awhile since I was a student there
FM me if you have any other questions.

Re: The one in NY.
I am from around that area and know quite a few people who went there.
The school had some pretty interesting nicknames and some of the grads I know were not at all religious.

She had called it "Mt. St. Mary in MD". I responded that it's "Mt. St. Mary's" and that Mt. St. Mary is in NY. There is a seminary and there was a statue at Mt. St. Mary's. I wasn't refering to the school in NY. You misread what I wrote

Are you talking about Gettysburg College?
If you are, then yes, the college is on part of the battlefields and "Stein Lake" in the middle of campus is actually a mass grave from the war.
Most of the battlefields butt up against the campus itself.
THere is also a seminary on campus too
