Any P/T teachers?

I am currently a f/t teacher in the city, and am considering an interview for a p/t position on Long Island.

Does anyone have any feedback on taking a p/t position. I have some personal pros and cons and would obviously need to seriously consider the salary and benefits if the offer was presented to me.

Just looking to hear from some people...the good, the bad, etc.

I did coordination part time. I liked it because I could do cases afterwards. It was the best of both worlds for me.

A big thing to think about is often, you do NOT accrue seniority in the district unless you are working full-time. You should ask abut that.

I did a .75 position the year after I had my second baby. Although I was there more often then I was not, it was like I was not there at all seniority wise.

Any P/T teachers?

I'm p/t at my school..a .83, but it's also a private school

Pros:

I only have to be here 15 minutes before a class and 15 minutes after, so I have a lot of time off, and more time at school to get things done

I don't have to attend all of the meetings, etc. although I normally do, and they compensate me for them

I still accrue seniority

Cons:

I was f/t last year, so taking a 17% pay cut wasn't fun

There are days like today, where they changed the schedule, and I have two hours before my first class, I teach for an hour, I have four hours off, and then I teach the last hour of the day. There's only so much grading/planning I have to do each day

I only get .83 of my sick days (8 instead of 10), but I still have to cover 6 periods (for some reason they don't decide to weight everything as part time, only some things)

Thanks for the feedback. I have a list of questions to ask if that time comes.

To me, Im not so sure it's worth it. I'm a f/t nyc teacher as well and you really need to think about it. Are you going to be part of the pension system if you are part time? Also tenure, seniority those are big things that you need to think about especially on the island. Because they are still laying teachers off. Just a couple of things to consider. If I were you I'd probably wait until something better comes along on the island.

I like the idea of it, but the fact that there is NO job security would cause me to shy away from it. P/T positions are the FIRST ones cut when the budget needs trimming....
