any preg after gastric bypass surgery?
Hi ladies ;) im kinda new to the boards so i dont know too many people on here..ok i know one person lol thats it ;) anyway i was wondering if anyone has had gastric bypass surgery and is now pregnant? I had my gastric bypass almost 9 years ago, and i lost a CONSIDERABLE amount of weight, with my son i gained 65 lbs pregnant (it was terrible) and i was very obese before hand as well...either way, im concerned with my weight gain now...i have kept off 90% of the weight i have lost over the last 8 years, and i KNOW im gonna gain baby weight, thats fine with me, and im not worried about losing it, im just nervous about putting TOO much on...my doctors are saying only between 15-20lbs!! I gave myself an under 30 limitation. whatdya think? anyone??

Re: any preg after gastric bypass surgery?
I had gastric bypass surgery in July of 2002 making me almost 6 years out. Up until pregnancy, I did not gain ANY weight back.
I am currently 31 weeks and 3 days PG with an extremely healthy pregnancy and ZERO complications. I have put on 20 pounds and it is all baby. It is not in my face or my legs (except my ankles). If you ask the people that have seen me, they will be very honest with you. I'm carrying rather well. I have not had ANY plastic surgery before hand but will after I have my second child as I only plan on having two. You can look at my pics in my albums and see my belly progression - its not all that bad.
The only thing I can tell you that is DIRECTLY related to the surgery was the iron issue. I am anemic. I was anemic BEFORE getting PG and as a result, became moreso when I got PG. I was prescribed Repliva by my OB upon suggestion from my surgeon. The iron supplements constipate me like nobody's business and I take Colace daily to help, but it isn't all that great.
Bottom line is that unless you have already stretched out your pouch, odds are you won't now - if you do, I would be very concerned and wonder if you are in fact eating TOO much. Don't worry. The baby will get all it needs from you just as it would with any other PG woman. Being PG won't make your stomach any bigger and shouldn't allow you to eat any more food than you do already. I suggest eating more than 3 times a day and eating iron-rich foods to help you absorb the iron that could be low due to possible anemia. I am very limited in my capacity for food a) because my pouch is still pretty small and b) the uterus pushed up all of the organs so eating (as it is with ANY PG woman) can be umcomfy.
Above anything else ASK YOUR DOCTORS for advice for proper nutrition and REMIND YOUR OB that you are a gastric bypass patient. Make sure they test your blood. There is no reason for you not to be able to have a healthy pregnancy. Feel free to FM me with any questions.
