Any pregnant women with Mitro Valve Prolapse who had to go to dentist?
So I have to go on Wednesday to fix the filling that I lost. My OB said that amoxicillan is fine to take but my dentist said that the AHA said that they don't believe MVP patients need to take any antibiotics at all anymore. I just don't know if I should take 2000 mg worth of amoxicillan or not?
What do you think?

I am not pregnant but I have MVP and supposably they changed the "rules". I saw my heart specialist a few months ago who said I no longer needed to take antibiotics before going to the dentist. However, when I was in labor, they did give me antibiotics through the IV

I have MVP, i used to take the antibiodics but for the past year-2 years- they did change it- you no longer need to. I just went to the dentist 2 weeks ago and didnt have alot of bleeding- no meds- everything is good.

What do you think? Your cardiologist should be the one making that decision, not your dentist. The reason is that some MVP patients still do need the amox. and some have been discovered not to need it. It depends on the type/severity of MVP that you experience.

I have MVP as well. About 2 years ago I was told that they no longer give meds before a dentist appointment. Apparently its not necessary anymore.
I wouldnt worry -- usually when it comes to these things they are overly cautious. So, if they're telling you you dont need it anymore, they're probably pretty certain that you'll be fine without it.

I have MVP too and I was wondering how it works with delivery. I tend to get more palpatations under stress and what can be more stressful than delivering a baby...were you scared with the MVP...it's something that always crosses my mind.

we tell our patients about the new guidelines but they must still check with their cardiologist, there are some people who still need the antibiotics.

My doc was the one who informed me about the change and told me I didn't need to take meds before the dentist anymore. I would call your doc and ask.

I have MVP too, but I have it so mild that my doctor never said I have to take antibiotics. I would definitely call your cardiologist to get directions from him.
