Any tips for spoon feeding?

We started Jake on cereal this week and he just cries and lets the cereal pool at the front of his mouth. I knew he wouldn't get it immediately but are they supposed to cry??

I tried feeding him at different times of the day to try and catch him when he's least cranky.

Any other tips?

Sounds to me like he isn't ready. I'd just wait and try again another time. It shouldn't be a struggle.

You can also try making the cereal a little more liquidy. I know in the beginning if it was too mushy and not liquidy enough then my daughter wouldn't eat it. But he just might not be ready yet.

My doctor said to feed him between bottle feedings...not when he's extremely hungry for a bottle. I also fed Jared with a spoon of liquidy cereal and then plugged the bottle in his mouth.

Apply a little bit of pressure on his tongue with the back of the spoon as you present the food in his moth. Give him a second to suckle the food off.

I tried both of these things already. Giving him the bottle just upsets him more because I have to take it away to try and give him more cereal.

This is what I'm thinking, DH says we just have to keep trying until he "gets" it that this is food and he's supposed to swallow it. I, on the other, rather not push him and think that maybe we should put it off another week or two....

he may not be ready....but you can also try putting a little food on the tip of your finger...if he doesn't take that...than he isn't ready.

It truely is a switch that gets turned on from one day to the next when they are ready.

Wow really...

We decided to take a break from trying for a couple of days and then resume and see how it goes.

It's funny because this morning when I was bringing his bottle toward his mouth, he looked at it and actually opened his mouth in anticipation of it...it was the first time he did that...so I guess he's on his way, just not quite there yet. Chat Icon
