Any tips on moving with a toddler?

DS will be turning 2 when we move in September. We're moving from a NYC apartment to a house on LI... it's a huge transition for us let alone our VERY structured DS. He's very routined, loves HIS bed, HIS tub (in fact he screams through baths anywhere else) etc. He is such a city kid too... We say he thinks he lives on Sesame Street but everyone in our building and the local stores know him and he goes to the park EVERY day where there is always a TON of stuff going on, people around etc. I'm SO nervous with how he'll adjust to much quieter, unfamiliar surroundings Chat Icon

Anyone have any tips with helping a toddler adjust to a move (not necessarily with the city to suburb transition)? Is there anything we can do to prepare him?

Just 1, set up his bedroom COMPLETELY first. Before you do anything else... and let him "help".

ITA and I would also try and layout the room the same way. We moved when DS was 15 months and his room is the same layout.

Hmmm... We one bedroom that is small and about the same size as his current bedroom but were going to put him in the bigger one. Maybe it makes more sense to put him in the small one? Maybe if we set that up as a nursery (he's still in a crib) we can move him to the big one when he gets a big boy bed?

Re: Any tips on moving with a toddler?

My four year old has lived in four places, so I have some experience with this one. The biggest thing is to find something that he'll be excited about at the new house. For our first move it was the backyard (from an apartment to the suburbs). The second move it was closer to grandma. The third move it was a swingset. Something simple that will give him something to look forward to.

Also, my pediatrician suggested putting the sheets from the old place back on the bed at the new house. So they smell like home for the first few nights. A little gross, but makes sense.
