Any way of searching if your neighbor is running a foster care or halfway house
I apologize in advance if this sounds crude or mean in anyway but I have concerns. The people next door who closed one month after us I think is running some form of children's service. We see many (MANY) children which we really do not have issues at all with. I figured perhaps the mother and the daughter living there just adopted a few kids no biggie. We noticed yesterday one of the boys who is about 12, had no shoes on, in his underwear in their backyard hitting things with a shovel. Smashing bottles, hitting a tree with it, just very odd behavior.
I just want to know if there is a way of knowing if they are running a service out of their home or is this private knowledge? Its not that I have a huge concern but I feel as the person living next door I should be made aware if they are running such services.

Re: Any way of searching if your neighbor is running a foster care or halfway house
you cant run foster care out of your home, the state runs foster care, but you can take in foster kids. It sounds like this could be what it is. A lot of times, they are troubled children and they act out. So this behavior is not completely unheard of for foster children.
If they are foster parents.....I honestly dont think its really anyone elses business....no offense. I dont think a neighbor is entitled to know that, its personal family information.

I'd probably look up their address anyway and if there are concerns about the children, I'd call CPS. If its just that theres alot of them, then theres nothing you can really do...

Another way to find out is to be friendly. Bring them a plate of cookies and get to know them. Maybe they can put your mind at ease.

If the children are behaving odd, it does not mean CPS should be called. You really don't know the consequences when they get involved. It really can be nothing.
I agree with bringing something over. Did you "welcome them to the neighborhood"?

Re: Any way of searching if your neighbor is running a foster care or halfway house
we said hello to each other a few times, they have been very nice to us with offering a tool to cut down hedges. I go over to give them mail that gets delivered to our house.
I will be visiting them this weekend to ask permission to go into their yard in order for us to have trees removed and trimming. I don't want to do an obvious pry that is why I wanted to see if there is a place to look up this info. I will just keep being nice to them and Dh and I discussed we will just make sure we have a budget to put the fence up by next year. There is nothing there except chicken wire and I am sure they don't like the lack of privacy as well.

If they are running an illegal day care you have every right to know about it.
My SIL reported a neighbor for that a few years ago.

If you are friendly with them, I would ask them straight out what the situation is. if not, can you ask one of the neighbors? I would be concerned about the older child's behavior, you have a right to know exactly what is going on.

Re: Any way of searching if your neighbor is running a foster care or halfway house
DH immediately made nice with all of our neighbors after we moved in so he always gets the latest scoop on any gossip going on with anyone. This way I don't have to pry.
He does the dirty work.
But seriously, it does sound like they may be foster kids and/or disabled.
I think if you get to be friendly with them, you will find out the real situation.

this sounds like very normal behavior...at least in my house.

People totally do run illegal day-cares & you have the right to know. Besides if you were to have a pool etc & one of the children fell in, your responsible. If the children are playing unsupervised then say something in a nice concerned way.

you don't call CPS because you think behavior is odd though. everyone's style of parenting is different. if her "son" (or whoever he is to her) wants to bang a shovel outside to bang around, that is not why you call CPS. you need to suspect or know of abuse or neglect. kids can have developmental disabilities, or just have plain old strange behaviors that make them do different things.
calling CPS is a big deal and can have major ramifications on that family. they SHOULD be called if true neglect/abuse is suspected, but not for any other reason.
to the OP: i would definitely try to get to know them better. hopefully there's a good explanation.

Exactly. People don't really know the ramifications when they are called. It is heartwrenching, especially when NOTHING is going on.

thank god someone said it bc I was SO thinking it. I would NEVER EVER call CPS and put a family or a child through that bc of odd behavior. Unless I knew for sure of abuse or neglect...thats REALLY REALLY extreme and a horrible thing to put a family through, especially a child.

Re: Any way of searching if your neighbor is running a foster care or halfway house
I would not be calling CPS- BUT - I am sorry, a 12 yr old, out in their underwear (it was not hot yesterday) smashing things (bottles - this is dangerous)-is not normal behavior. I would approach the mom and make sure she was home and is aware that was happening. That child could get seriously hurt smashing bottles

If she is running a LEGAL daycare, you should be able to find it HERE.
