Re: Anybody ever have a Kidney Stone?
I've already experienced the pain.
Did you have to strain your urine!?!
I had the lithotripsy done on the 21st and they inserted a stent. They removed the stent today and the urologist wants me to strain my urine in hopes that I'll find some fragments (although to quote my urologist "I pulvarized that thing, so I don't think you'll find much." )
Anyway, just wondering what I should be looking for!?!

Re: Anybody ever have a Kidney Stone?
I ended up in the hospital for a week right after giving birth to Lauren (she was 3 weeks old ). It turns out I had a kidney infection, a blocked ureter and a kidney stone (5 mm big). It was the worst week in the hospital - just being away, not so much the pain because my stone never moved. I've gone through many tests and renal scans, and ended up having a stent put in as well (how did you find yours was - mine was ok, but I had to pee every 5 minutes). I got the stent taken out at the end of October and seems as if things are better now. I go back once more for my radioactive renal scan and once those results are in, I will then see if I need surgery. Not a fun road.
In any case, after all that, my urologist decided not to do anything with my kidney stone.... I guess only time will tell! SO far no pain on my left side anymore!
My stent was in for 6 weeks, how long was your in for?

Re: Anybody ever have a Kidney Stone?
Thanks Jessica!!
Trish...OMG! right after having Lauren!?! That must have been hard!!!
I thought I had a UTI, but the ER doctor sent me for a CT scan anyway "just in case". Thank god she did b/c they saw the kidney stones and one in my appendix (I have to go see a surgeon for that in a couple of months. )
Yeah, my stone was over 4mm and was blocking ureter. They couldn't do the ESWL b/c the contrast couldn't get through.
As for the stent, it was in for 2 weeks. I felt really crampy, bloated, had occasional back pains, plus there was always blood in my urine. Now that it's out, those symptoms went away. I had no idea how big it was until they showed me!!!! I was thinking it was a small 1" mesh piece like they would use in an artery.
Now I have to put my pee into a jug for the next 24 hours so a lab can analyze it. My urologist really wants to find out why I got these stones in the first place since I have no family history of them. But now that Janet mentioned caffiene...I wouldn't be surprised if that was the culprit.
Can't they do the lithotripsy for you instead of surgery?

My mom had a few about two years ago. She had the "blasting" done twice because the first time she was straining urine and only a few little fragments, second time same thing. Finally she had to have them removed. She showed them to me - they were like pieces of a shell - to me they almost looked like pieces of a nail clipping.

Yep, same here with the stent. When my urologist told me I didn't have to go back to the hospital to have it removed, I was like, ok It took him three trys!! with his little device to get it out and when I saw what it looked like I was purely amazed! It looked like a long piece of coated wire, not the one inch mess thingy I thought like you did! Never had the blood in the urine, but twards the 5th and 6th week it was in, I couldn't leave the house because I was peeing every 5 minutes.
My kidney infections and problems are not from the stone, in fact its still in my kidney. My problem is a blockage where the kidney meets the ureter. Since it gets blocked, the urine backs up in the kidney and causes infections, which are painful! THe stent was the first step to see if the blockage would open up. If it didn't I will have to have surgery so they can go in and repair it
