anybody feeling financially trapped?
I am getting closer and its not that we dont have the $ (we both work and have our masters) but its that everything cost a pretty penny for the baby and I just dont get how people are making it. My mother keeps telling me that it ALWAYS works out for everyone bc Look around everyones made it some how...but I just cant get this off my mind. Anyone else stressing? I am so stressed I started stacking up on diapers before the baby. I am about to stock the formula thats how obsessed I am getting with this.

Yes! Still don't know how I will pay my mortgage when I'm out of work for 8 weeks and only getting disability! I'm trying to save now, but I don't see it happening! My mother says the same thing - it will all work itself out. She should know, though, she had six of us within 9 years and only my father worked (a city teacher making diddly back in the 60's)!

It's normal to feel that way, but it really will work out. You just stop spending $$ on other stuff, and your $$ goes towards the baby. Neither of us make a lot of $$, but we are managing. Good luck!

Its amazing how much less money you spend once they are here. I rethink things that I pick up in a store now. Do I really need it?? Naa I'll put it back. Sign up for all of the formula companies, you can trade with other moms on the Parenting board and save tons. You will be surprised how it works out.....I would def rec a Costco/BJ's membership if you don't already have one. Between diapers, food, detergent and formula we save a ton there!

I agree, I spend next to nothing on myself. I was lucky, when Sarah was born our families were very generous and gave us a ton of clothes for her. When Andy was born a very good friend gave me boys clothes from newborn to 3T, so I really don't have to buy him any clothes. One of my neighbors was throwing out a pack n play since they didn't need it anymore, I took it and washed it down and use it. I buy them clothes at Once Upon A Child in Massapequa, and I stock up at the end of the season for the next summer. They don't care that the shorts are from last year's line.
If you are stocking up on diapers and formula, keep your reciepts. Your baby may not take to the formula or may outgrow the diapers, need a different brand, etc.

Re: anybody feeling financially trapped?
I defintely do. We just built a new deck this summer and it wound up being about $3500 over budget. I feel like we've got nothing to fall back on. We totally need to rebuild our savings.

You are sooooo not kidding but I have some small advice...I am doing the in home day care for my newborn in December and it is half the price. I also worked as a nanny in the past and I personally made a ton of money on 3 kids but for 2 you could probably pay someone like 300-400. I cant imagine sending 2 to daycare at 300 a pop!

Re: anybody feeling financially trapped?
We are feeling the same way or at least I am. My DH tells me don't worry about it. I know we are getting alot of diaper, bath etc items at Costco in large quanitities. I am also going to be working from home and DH will probably work extra hours. My parents have also bought alot of things for us and my Mom has crotqued alot of clothes. My DH and I don't really buy things for ourselves just necessaties. We'll see how we do.

Re: anybody feeling financially trapped?
It's definitely costly but you'll find yourself going out a LOT less.
Rather than stock up on formula, go for the diapers. You could get all of the formula only to find out your baby has digestive issues.

This is our delimma. While I make a good salary infant daycare for twins (if I can get TWO slots in a center) will run us over $25K a year. YUP, 25K at least at a center. I'll feel rich once they go to school all day...lol.
Just remember your baby does NOT need a designer nursery and half the stuff people buy. For the nursery all we are buying are two cribs. We are using two matching old Ikea dressers for now and putting a changing pad on them. I might also buy a bookcase and a chair but not a designated baby glider because many are overpriced. I'm not spending 2K on furniture because I won't have any more pregnancies and I'd rather save the money to buy quality big girl/big boy bedroom sets that they will have until college and beyond.
There is also nothing wrong with hand me downs.

Re: anybody feeling financially trapped?
DH has been laid off since April - he works a few part time jobs... I work full time at a demanding job which goes into later hours, plus 2 evenings a week at a different job, and work all day on saturday at another job. DH has 2 kids he has to pay child support for, and can't find a job in his field (he interviewed recently - so hopefully somehting will happen soon!)
the pregnancy was a surprise, and right now we are hardly scraping by. we turned off our answering machine because all we have are messages from bill collectors. Its a nightmare, and plus - I can only take 6 wks off for maternity leave because we can't afford unpaid leave, but the cathc 22 is that means we have to pay for child care....
We rent our house (no way we can buy) and need to move to a larger house for the baby, and also because our landlord wants to move back around the time the baby is due, so we have that over our heads as well....
So, yeah - we are feeling financially trapped.

Re: anybody feeling financially trapped?
I TOTALLY don't understand how I am going to do this. I see girls on this board who are SAHM, drive a Lexus and buy the $600 bedding sets - how do they do it?? My DH and I have decent jobs and get median pay. I am sooo stressed about being financially in trouble when the baby is born. I can hardly make my bills now. Within the next few months, our friend is moving out of the house (he paid us rent) and the baby is coming. How will this work?? All I can do is rely on the Big Man Upstairs, because I know I can't do it by myself!

Re: anybody feeling financially trapped?
I'm pretty nervous too. I am taking 8 weeks off. 1 is paid the other is on disability. we've put away some money- but we rent and I'd like to save it for a house... my mom is going to watch the baby- so she says- but she has to commute to me from LI to NJ which is going to be hard- we'll see how long that lasts.

Re: anybody feeling financially trapped?
I am nervous and scared as well. I only get unpaid maternity leave and we need both salaries to get by, so our small savings will be seriously depleted. I haven't given birth yet and I'm already stressed beyond belief about going back to work after my leave. I don't know how people do it, but over and over again I see that they manage to get by so I have to hold out hope!

Re: anybody feeling financially trapped?
I can't really say that I feel financial trapped right now. But, after comes, we will need to get a car and thinking about THAT added expense makes me nervous. Not have a car will mean MUCH less time with DS than I am comfortable with.

Re: anybody feeling financially trapped?
I am not feeling worried yet- we won't need daycare till the baby is about 10 months because DH is hopefully getting a sabbatical, I will be home for the summer and when I go back to work from leave he will be done with his school year. But I know when that time gets closer I will be stressed. And we also won't wait too long to have #2 (if we decide to have a second) because of my age.
