Anyone able to lose weight while on long term Prednisone?
I have gained 9 lbs in the last 6 months while taking Prednisone. I am not eating any differently.
I may never be able to get off of the Prednisone. The weight I gained is obvious in my face and my clothes are uncomfortable.
I am trying Jenny Craig right now.
Anyone successful at losing/ keeping weight off while on Pred?

Yes, my MIL has been on it for close to 20 years and has been able to loose weight on it. Right now she eats very clean, that was the main way she lost the weight.

Re: Anyone able to lose weight while on long term Prednisone?
I was on prednisone for a few months and lost a significant amount of weight, when i was really just trying not to gain weight. I ate extrememly clean, nothing with more than 5 ingredients and the ingredients had to be real foods. I also read that prednisone depletes your potassium and makes you retain sodium. So I made sure I had adequate potassium in my diet and cut out 95% of sodium. I lost about 15lbs, but also worked out 6 days a week.
You can do it, good luck!

I made sure to always get my water in. Like everyone else said I ate very clean. I tried to listen to my body more. If I was just craving versus really needed good. Since it also raises blood sugars I tried to decrease my carbs and also eat low glycemic foods.

I will also suggest talking to your doctor or seeing an endocrinologist that specializes in RA because if this is something you need to be on long term it does affect your bones and you will eventually get loose bone density. It may be a good idea to take extra calcium or vitamin D.

Thank you. I do see a Rheumatologist for the RA as well as an Endo. I do get bone density tests yearly and also take Vitamin D. I am desperate to get off the Prednisone, but I haven't found a medication that properly controls my RA yet.
Hopefully the next one will work and i can wean off it.

Changing your diet will help with inflammation. Also, Fish oil or flaxseed oil in liquid form will help lubericate your body from the inside. My mother in law started doing this and it has helped, she puts it in her smoothies. I also know for me, when I was taking fish oil vitamins it helped with my knee pain.
I hope some of this help and I hope you feel better.

Mine is not controlled yet, so I cannot walk if I drop below 7.5 mg. On 10mg, I can function almost normally.

Have you heard of the autoimmune protocol? It's an even stricter form of the paleo diet, but many people with autoimmune disease are managing their symptoms and even getting off meds through this diet. No grains, dairy, sugar, veg oils, nightshades, nuts, legumes, etc.--basically foods that are known to cause inflammation in the body, especially those with AI disease. Vitamin d is also important for those with AI disease.
This Facebook group is really helpful:
The paleo approach

Re: Anyone able to lose weight while on long term Prednisone?
I have been on Pred for 4 months and I am so fat. It's awful. I am down to 10 mg and will be weaning to 5mg starting tomorrow. I am hoping that makes a difference. I was up to 40mg at time and most of the 4 months was on 20 mg. I was starving though. So I know some of this weight gain is real. I ate a lot more. Plus I was really stressed with the health issues and stress eating. But, the moon face, and the crazy tummy fat is all prednisone. I am hoping that it starts to come off as I get to lower doses. The dr is hoping that I am off it in 2 weeks. I have doubts. Each time I go down, I have a very bad week until my body stabilizes. I think it will be more like a month.
Good luck with weight loss. I am so beyond discouraged. I guess clean eating would help. I ate out a lot because I was so beyond tired or in pain or covered in hives. I am feeling a lot better so I need to eat in more and that will help.
