Anyone adopted? DNA/Genetic Test?
Asking for a loved one... He is adopted and he's like maybe I should get one of those tests done to get a CLUE into my history, health, genealogy, etc. I mean, he literally has not a clue.
He mentioned there was one, he thought, on Ancestry.com where you have to submit to a DNA test. Does anyone have personal experience with this?
Or another company/method to do this?
Any info you could give would be a big help. I'm going to go about doing some research to help him start this process. I guess I'm lucky, not only do I know my whole medical history, but I know my family tree history too - I mean, my relatives keep such great records of everything and you almost take it for granted, but it's so wonderful to have/know.
Thanks!

OMG tell me everything about it.
First of all, what did you have to do to submit a DNA sample? Cheek swab?
And then what happened? They mail you info?
And what did you learn?
Spare no detail! I find this super interesting and I'm SO interested to see what his findings are - just want to choose the right place!
Also, cost? (((CRINGE)))

Re: Anyone adopted? DNA/Genetic Test?
You pay and they mail you a kit. You give a sample (saliva - I think it was about 1/4 teaspoon) and they give you a solution to mix it with. You mail it back (pre-paid)
Then in 6-8 weeks (mine only took 4 actually) they send you the results. Its pretty cool. I'll attach the picture of mine so you can see. It also matches you with ppl that are genetic relations, if you'd like. My husband did it also, and so did my SIL, and Ancestry informed them that they were likely "immediate family" - there was nothing in either of their information that would lead Ancestry to believe this OTHER than their DNA match, so I do believe it is 100% legit.

Re: Anyone adopted? DNA/Genetic Test?
I have the ancestry one. I have to mail it in. A very close match was found on ancestry with my cousin and nephew. We have no knowledge of this person. We think it might have been an affair out of wedlock since he was adopted.

Anyone adopted? DNA/Genetic Test?
I did the National Geographic geno 2.0 DNA test to dig deeper into my Latin heritage. I also ordered it for my grandfather and am awaiting the results. Technically the best one is by a company called 23andme. They have the largest database and their forums are awesome. Although i do really love the in depth info from the National Geographic, there are only about 700k participates. I only had 1% of the population matching my maternal line, where with 23andme, it's much higher.

Anyone adopted? DNA/Genetic Test?
We had my dad do it because we don't know a lot about his fathers side of the family. Since my dad is obv make the way it works is It ONLY goes along the paternal line. So his dad's dads dad...if we wanted to know about his mothers line he has a first cousin who is a woman whose mother was sisters with his mother. So because the cousin would do it and it would go mothers mothers mother the results would apply to my dad as well. If he didn't have this cousin he would never be able to figure it his mothers side bc his mother is passed and no sisters.
So for your family member who is adopted you will only know 50p and it will be whatever gender you are. This is how it was a few years ago when we had my dad do it. It was pretty cool regardless.

You're wrong. At least if you're talking about ancestry. It has zero to do with gender.

Yes. A ton. Also my uncle did it and ancestry matched us as immediate family!

Well, I think she's talking about mitochondrial DNA. However, her father does have maternal mitochondrial DNA in his cells, so information about his maternal line is there. The issue with gender is actually about the male being the only carrier of the Y chromosome genes. So, females, having no Y chromosome, can not get info about the paternal line without a brother, father, grandfather getting tested.

Re: Anyone adopted? DNA/Genetic Test?
But we're talking about ethnicity DNA, not diseases etc. Ancestry.com has nothing to do with gender. Maybe if we were talking about genetic testing for medical reasons it'd be different.

Ancestry.com and gender
5&6 explain why it's gender neutral.

I'm talking about the 23 & Me genetic testing. My parents both did it. They got ethnicity and medical information. But they can not get information regarding the paternal line from a female, only a male, bc they test the Y chromosome.
I don't know what they have on ancestry.com.

Re: Anyone adopted? DNA/Genetic Test?
If you want to ever utilize the information for nutrigenomics or medical purposes, 23andme is probably the way to go since many of the apps that interpret the data is aligned with 23andme. Geneticgenie, livewello etc I know just today a practitioner was complaining about using ancestory.com , it just wasn't as user friendly.
23andme used to provide the medical data but they no longer do. However the raw data can be put into a variety of apps.
I think it's one of the most crucial type of tests you can do for your health.
As far as connecting with family, the more people who do it, the more that will happen. It's definitely interesting.
