Anyone apply, work for or have any info on the NYC teaching fellowship?
I am in the middle of filling out the application.
They help pay for your masters and get you a job, the salary seems ok, I'm just wondering how long you have to commit to working in the city....
Info anyone?

I have friends who did it - all I know is they put you in the most needed schools, which are usually in the tougher neighborhoods.
but its a great way to gain experience, and paying for grad school!
good luck!

I had two friends who did it, one stayed in it and the other quit, got her masters on her own, and then got a teaching job.

Re: Anyone apply, work for or have any info on the NYC teaching fellowship?
Most of the info is on the website..
It's a 2-3 year commitment, for the length it takes you to complete your master's degree. if you quit early, you have to pay back anything they paid toward your degree.
I know it's become ahuge program now and they're specifically looking for people who can do math, science, special ed or ESL. FH and I both applied for Math and Science. I didn't finish my application because it's not what I want to do at this time, but FH was accepted into the next level and will interview for the June 2007 program.
I've heard mixed things about NYCTF and Teach for America, which is a similar program. Some people have told me they love it and it's the bets experience of their lives, some people have told me they hated it and could not wait to get out.
I think it has a lot to do with placement, how supportive the faculty at your school is (I was reading around on teacher websites and a lot of them are pretty biased against fellows) and of course the kids. I think you have to mentally and emotionally prepare yourself for the fact that you could end up in a rough area with virtually no support so that anything added to that will be gravy.
ETA: Also note that they pay for the masters that will lead to certification in what you teach for them. So it's either an education degree or a math degree, etc..you don't get to choose. Also, I don't think you get to choose the school.

I would never do that program. And they don't really pay for your degree. They take money out of your check and put it in an escrow account. Also u don't chose what school you go to. There is little support for the teachers as well!

I work with some teachers who have done this program and have said it is fine...they are still working even after getting their masters.
My district isn't too bad and the schools I 've been in not bad at all...and there have been a lot of fellowship teachers placed here.

It's not always a bad school. FH's mom is a para in a school in Brooklyn and it's academically a very good school.. At Stuy there were SO many kids from this school and it's generally a good environment and they have several fellows.
