anyone been to gettysburg PA?

dh are thinking of taking a road trip for a few days in october and could use some guidance. thanks!

Ohhhh yes I have been there.

I am not a fan of sight seeing or museums, so I hated it. But, if you are into that stuff, you will absolutely love it. DH is a history teacher so he was in his glory!

They have a coach bus tour that goes all around the battlefield and important statues. It also goes into the town itself and shows buildings that still have actual bullet holes still in them (I found that pretty interesting). It also visits allegedly haunted parts on the battlefield. There is a musem which has all sorts of artifacts, and then the cemetary is there too. You can also drive around the battlefield on your own, which we did after the tour.

You can go into town and see a museum where Lincoln had stayed and the train station.

I recommend the Lincoln diner for lunch. They have GREAT burgers.

we were there last march for a wedding. Unfortunately, that was the 'big snow storm' and they got like 3 feet of snow so we were only able to really see the museum and sit through a presentation. DH was definitely more interested in it than I was. It would have been nice to actually see/walk the battlefields (there are signs/markers everywhere) but everything was shut down for the snow

i went to college in gettysburg, but i haven't been back in a few years so i'm not sure what it's like now.

depending on when in october you might be there for the apple harvest festival. it's not actually in gettysburg, it's like 20-30 miles away. lots of yummy food.

i second the suggestion for the lincoln diner. yum! also for a fancier dinner the dobbin house is quite good.

also the walk up to little round top is nice. you get a good view of the battlefield from there.

You don't have to do the bus tour if you don't want to - I went and took a lot of pictures for my photography call years ago - but you can buy a tape/cd and put it in your car and it will give you a personal driving guided tour.

Dh says if you're road tripping and want to sight-see comfortably, there's a audio tour on CD for $13. You can get it in town (he doesn't remember the place, but there are signs). It takes about 2 hours to see almost everything.
