Anyone commute to Manhattan on the LIRR?

Do you plan on staying at your current job with the same commute after the baby is born?

I am going to try my hardest to keep my job. I commute from Stony Brook, so my commute is over 2 hours each way and my hours are kinda long. I am going to ask if I can only go in 3 days a week, and work from home one day.

What are your plans?

Re: Anyone commute to Manhattan on the LIRR?

I hate my job and was actually looking for another one when I found out I was pregnant. My plan is to quit after the baby is born and then 6 months or so later start looking for a job on LI. I dont want to do the commute into the city once the baby is here.

ETA: I know a few people who were able to work from home 2 days a week and only commute 3 days a week. I think a lot of companies will try and work with you so they dont lose you.

I am going to ask to come in as little as possible and work from home. My commute is tough on me now without a baby to think about!

I commute from Ronkonkoma. It sucks. I am a teacher so I get home around 5:30. My total commute time from door to door is 5 hours a day.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think once I have the baby I am going to put out my resume and try to get a job on LI. If not I will have to continue working in the city.

I gotta hand it to you girls...I couldn't do it.

I commuted last year when we first moved on LI, but decided to look for a job out here once we made the decision to start a family.

Luckily I was able to find something close to home.

I respect you all!!!

Re: Anyone commute to Manhattan on the LIRR?

I commute from Bethpage and am keeping my job after the baby comes. My commute is about half of yours and I think its a pain sometimes. I would not be able to do it if I were you!

Can you look for another job closer to home if they wont let you work from home? Sometimes I get paranoid about getting home fast in case something is wrong bc both DH and I commute into NYC. Or god forbid another 9/11 happens and we cant get home for hours. Luckily we have some family that could help us out, but I still get worried about it.

If I worked on long island I would have to take a 50% pay cut. I have looked. I might feelance and do it all from home eventually. I get home now at 9:00. I wake up at 6:00. I have no life. I have to make a change.

If I got home at 6:00 I would be the happiest woman in the world.

I commute from Commack, but I only do it 3 days a week. I really don't know what I'm going to do after #2 is born. I think it's going to get a lot harder.

Re: Anyone commute to Manhattan on the LIRR?

I commute from Nassau - it's about 1 1/2 each way. I'm going to see how it goes. My office is usually a little slower in the summer and that's when I'd be going back to work after my leave - so I'll test 3 days a week for July/August (if my boss OKs this) and decide from there. Right now I feel like I can't say how it will work - I may hate it (I'm already a little sick of the commute) or it might be doable. If I'm miserable, I'll have to decide to resign and find something on LI (which I'm sure will be a fraction of what i make now).

This was my exact situation.
I negotiated with my current employer and I work from home 4 days a week.

Do it before you go out on maternity leave!

Same here... kudos to you guys! I don't know how you do it either! I used to work in the city and now have been working on LI for several years. I have contemplated going back to working in the city, there are a lot of good jobs in my field in the city and obviously a lot better paying jobs. But I knew my DH and I would be starting a family soon and the thought of commuting into the city while pg or while I have a baby at home would be too hard. Especially 2hrs each way! So here I stay making less money on LI for now. Maybe I will go back in the future, when the kids are grown.

How do you find time to cook dinner and do anything else like exersize, clean, etc.?

Well, I walk to the train station in the morning, then from work to the subway. My walk is broken up, but it's around 45 minutes a day, sometimes longer if I make stops, so that's my exercise. Cooking is nothing special most nights, and cleaning, well, really doesn't happen except on weekends. My house is never as clean as I'd like.

Commuting is getting hard for me--it always was, but harder at 32 weeks. I commute from Nassau, but I work in Brooklyn, and the total trip is just under 2 hours most days. I really need to talk to my boss about working from home one day a week till I go on leave. I would love to work from home more, but that's about all I can swing with meetings and such.

After DC is born, I do hope to find work on LI, closer to home. I can't see coming up at 8 or 8:30 every night with a baby and managing daycare pick-ups at all.

I commute from East Meadow to Upper Westchester each day and it takes me anywhere from 1 1/2 to 2 hours each way. I have one son now and he has a really long day. Sometimes he's the first one there in the morning and the last one there at night - it rips my heart out. After baby #2 comes I'm going to take my 6 weeks full pay maternity, my 6 weeks FMLA and hopefully be able to find something new while I'm out.

I too just moved back to LI and was looking when I found out that I was preggers. Now I have wait. I went on some interviews in the way beginning and the market was a challenge.

Re: Anyone commute to Manhattan on the LIRR?

I commuted from Ronkonkoma to NYC while I was PG and hated every minute of it. After DD was born I luckily got an excellent severance package because I have no family here and my hours were 9-6, which really doesn't work for many daycare facilities

I have been doing this for 13 years now. my house is in construction mode, so I only clean the kitchen, bathrooms, den and our bedroom on a regular basis. I am painting every weekend- since the summer. exercise has been put on hold till the house gets done.

I also travel for work frequently, so I workout at the hotel.

before we started the house I would leave the house at 5:00 to get to the gym before getting on the train. I haven't done that since I got PG. I need to get there!!!

I rarely cook, but if I get home at 9:00, I heat up left overs, or I cook if its 8:00 when I get home. we eat dinner from 9:30 to 10:30, clean up, and go to bed at 11:00 every night. yes, it sucks!!

I don't know how a baby is going to fit in! I have to cut back hours, work on the train more, and work from home two days a week, and only go in 3 times.

As for dinner, we eat that late too most of the time. My dh doesn't come home most nights until 9:00-9:45. So I usually cook and wait to eat with him.

At least you can take a nap on the train ride and catch up on your sleep right? Good luck, I hope your job can work with you so things will be easier for you when your Chat Icon Chat Icon gets here!

Re: Anyone commute to Manhattan on the LIRR?

I do but luckily I work right by Penn & walk to my office (no subway ride).

I'm usually home by 5:30pm. DH & I took the commute into consideration before we bought our house because I knew that I would have to keep working.

Hopefully it will work out ok after DC arrives.

Good luck with trying for the part time. Even with my commute I would love to scale down to 3 days in NYC & 2 home.

I worked in the city until I was 36 weeks, then I couldn't take the commute anymore and that was the express bus from Staten Island to Manhattan.

I was let go when I was 38 weeks, I was able to get unemployment and just two weeks ago I returned to work on LI (I should add that we moved out to LI) and I make MORE money and my commute is WAY shorter. It is SO much better than the city.Chat Icon

Re: Anyone commute to Manhattan on the LIRR?

All the more power to you, I can't imagine Chat Icon I commute to Manhattan every day but from Little Neck... and I work at 2 Penn so my commute, door to door, is no more than 35 min. It was one of my 'rules' when we were looking for some place to buy - I wanted a commute less than 45min.

Good luck with work - I'll keep my fingers crossed that they allow you to work at home as much as possible Chat Icon

Re: Anyone commute to Manhattan on the LIRR?

I don't know how you ladies do it who commute to the city.

I could never do it, honestly for me the $$ would never be worth it.

I give you all alot of credit.

Christine, your stamina amazes me.

edited to add, I really think that America in General needs to be more flexible with working moms.

I absolutely hate the all or nothing situation that a workplace can put you in.

I worked very hard for my career, 4 years of college and 2 1/2 years of graduate school while working full-time.

I like my job and I don't want to give it up, but I also want to spend time with my future children.

There needs to be more of a balance. For me and I think for alot of other woman out there who are moms, working 3 or 4 days week would be ideal.
