Anyone else cringing when they hear sandy compared in any way to 9/11?
I don't know why but it bothers me. In my mind, you can't compare a storm that we were warned of to a devastating terrorist attack.

I haven't heard it compared to that but I agree with you.
Justin the number of lives lost alone they are not in the same category.
Although Sandy did devaste SOOOO many homes and communities- material things can't be compared to lives lost.

I haven't heard it compared either...except for the marathon taking place.
The only similarity is a city devasted and grieving for the suffering.

I haven't heard this comparison made yet and I'm not sure how anyone could make the comparison.
One was an act of terror, the other an act of nature.
While both were/are devastating, they're not comparable in the least bit.
I have heard some people say this was our "Katrina". I suppose that's a tad closer but I still don't think you can compare the two as it can easily turn into an issue of quantifying the severity of each and that can only get ugly.

Re: Anyone else cringing when they hear sandy compared in any way to 9/11?
In a press conference this afternoon the reference was made when trying to justify still hosting the marathon. They said that after 9-11 ny'ers had to show the city is strong and goes on and that hosting the marathon will show the same. That is a paraphrase not direct quote.
That said it did rub me the wrong way. esp since people in need are wide spread and people were being asked to vacate hotels that were reserved for runners. I think ny'ers need the hotels and water more then the runners. I am glad they postponed it till spring.

I just think in terms of something that was so devastating to the city, it can be compared to 9/11. I don't think you can really cmpare anything though. I did't really like people calling it "our Katrina" either. I think this was thankfully handled so much better

I haven't heard the comparison yet, but my guess is that for those that lost loved ones or all their belongings, it might *feel* like their 9/11.

I hear what your saying ... I lost my father in 9/11 so it's completely different for me however it did get me very emotional because it brought me back to that time when there was a disaster and everyone was going crazy ...

The only comparison I've heard is in reference to NY'ers coming together in a time of need.

It doesn't really bother me. In my mind they are two different disasters, but there are some similarities as pp have said. The widespread chaos, fear, the desperation and helplessness. I too remember the stunned and confused looks on people's faces after 911 and I saw (and felt) that again after Sandy too.

They obviously are completely different, but the overall feeling of confusion, helplessness and fear are the same. I think the way we will recover will be similar as well- by sticking together, working together, helping each other. We must stand united, the same way we did during 9/11. I think that's why most people see the similarity.
Yes, both disasters were completely different- one was an act of violence and the other a natural disaster. I don't think anyone is comparing them, per say. I think the general uneasy and depressed feeling is the same. I know I woke up the morning after sandy and I felt that same depressed feeling I did after 9/11.
