Anyone else doing "kids only" for the holidays this year?

We are, surprise surprise, still struggling. We discussed just doing a few things for the kids this year - one nice thing each, and then little stocking stuffer-type things. DH and I decided that really, we just can't do gifts for each other this year. I'm ok with it - I was just wondering if anyone out there is doing the same this year?

We are doing the same with birthdays too. Mine is this month, and DH's is next month - not a good time to heap birthday gifts onto this - especially since both stepdaughter's bdays are in January Chat Icon

DH and I just do little stuff for each other.

Actually, and little stuff for Christopher since everyone else (read-my parents) spoil the crap out of him

My extended family has done this for years

DH and I aren't exchanging gifts. There was really nothing either of us want so why spend the money just for the sake of spending money?

We're just doing stocking stuffers for each other so the kids don't wonder why Santa forgot us.

Since we've been married, we've been buying one "big gift" for the house and nothing individually for each other. The "big gift" is something we need for the house. One year it was a TV, one year an area rug, this year it will probably be a vacuum cleaner! Chat Icon

That is what we do.

When my parents were with us, we gave to them, they gave to us, we gave to the children but we did not give to siblings, BILs or SILs - there is simply too many of us.

Yeah - the higher end items will be coming from DH's sister. Cailen is easy to please - a piece of paper with a picture of Spiderman on it will make him ecstatic.

The girls - almost 19 and 13..... Not so much Chat Icon If it doesn't have a label on it, they Chat Icon

We are only doing stockings between DH and I. Otherwise it's kids only!

Yep... we've been doing this for a few years now. Between the two of us, there are 11 nephews under 10 and 1 niece, 3 years old. This year we have DD. We have a huge family, and would go broke buying for everyone, so we just stick to the kids. And for the parents, we give pictures of the grandkiddies.

Yep! My husband and I are doing only 1 gift for each other and then stocking stuffer type things. We're also not going overboard with the kids because 1) they have grandparents and aunts and uncles who spoil them and 2) we don't have any room for more toys!

I love DH, but he has missed the boats on presents for me every year Chat Icon I don't really remember one gift he has given me for Xmas, so it's just as well! Cailen on the other hands still plays with the toys he got for his 1st Xmas!

Re: Anyone else doing "kids only" for the holidays this year?

Except for DH and DS, we only give a small gift to 4 other children. Then to a friend couple because we usually spend Christmas Day together. I don't exchange gifts with my mom, siblings, even my nieces overseas. It costs way too much. We do wish each other a good Holiday. My mom only buys for DS. The rest does not. There is an understanding that it just cost too much.

We almost never exchange gifts. We buy what we want during the year and if it comes to exchanging gifts we gift each other a list then go buy off of it. Kind of lame. Holidays and birthdays are pretty much about the kids.

That is what we do except we still buy for BIL because he doesn't have kids and he is very generous with DS. This year we got him something extra special hand made on Fire Island (I've been busting at the seams since August about this). When we did exchange with siblings we found that we usually got gift cards. I felt like there is not a lot of thought in gift cards & someone is going to feel weird if they buy the "wrong" amount. I do still exchange with DH & it is a tradition we enjoy.

Re: Anyone else doing "kids only" for the holidays this year?

We usually only exchange Xmas gifts but with only one income this year we decided that we were not getting anything for each other this year. We brought only for the kids.

DH and I never exchange. We buy whatever we want throughout the year so during Christmas time we make it all about the kids.

I wanted to do just my niece and nephew on my DH's side but everyone is against it. I don't need anything and neither does anyone else. I like just making it about the kids and the grandparents (our parents).

Since having children we stopped exchanging gifts with each other (birthday and xmas.) For birthday's we get each other a really small something from the kids (usually a picture type thing.)

For me xmas is about the kids, I don't care if I get anything. We usually buy ourselves what we want/need throughout the year and call it our xmas or birthday gift

OMG.. this made me laugh.. my DH doesnt miss the boat because I have to TAKE HIM shopping to get it!!! He literally would miss the boat.. meaning, talk about going out but never go if I didnt make him go.. its not that he doesnt want to or doesnt think about me... hes just not as motivated as I am to go shopping... but to answer your question, we are getting one gift for each other.. he wanted a sweatshirt, I want an SLR.. thats even, no?

Re: Anyone else doing "kids only" for the holidays this year?

This is the first Christmas with DS. In the past we would exchange with parents, siblings & kids. This year is going to be different! We put the only children rule in effect! And we will buy small things for each other from DS.

Re: Anyone else doing "kids only" for the holidays this year?

My family always does kids only and a grab bag for the adults. We have a large extended family that celebrates together and anything else would cost a fortune.

Re: Anyone else doing "kids only" for the holidays this year?

In years prior, we bought ONLY for the kids & then our immediate families (brothers, SIL's & parents). Now that we have DS this year, we told everyone that we are ONLY doing kids. It was welcomed by everyone. I will buy both sets of Grandparents items from the baby but nothing crazy.

DH & I always buy one big ticket item for our house as our present to each other.

Re: Anyone else doing "kids only" for the holidays this year?

DH & I never exchange gifts with each other for b-days or Christmas...we go out to a nice dinner, or put $ towards a bigger purchase for the house, etc.

We only do gifts for our mothers and our nieces/nephews...we don't exchange with our own siblings, aunts, etc. But the gifts for our mothers (from us and from their granddaughter) we spend a good amount of $$ on.

We hardly ever get each other gifts. We are a bit more into experiences so if we had the money(and a babysitterChat Icon ) we would probably take a trip or something

Re: Anyone else doing "kids only" for the holidays this year?

Starting this year we will be doing this. I admit its hard for me, I'm spoiled and usually wait till Christmas to ask for things I hate to buy for myself like perfume, clothes etc....LOL

...but times are tough and I would rather spoil my kids. We dont have too large of a family, so we buy a lot for Noah ( the girls are too young, we got a nice pass for this yr. with them Chat Icon )

We ALWAYS do just kids. Both our families are too big to buy all people. We get each other just something little. (this yr we are not doing gifts, buying a house instead). We get my grandma, and DS's grandma's.
