Anyone else nervous about Pres Obama's speech tonight?
Is anyone else nervous about President Obama's speech tonight about Afghanistan?
He is expected to say that we are sending upwards of 30,000 more troops there and to discuss a strategy for our involvement.
DH is in the reserves and hasn't been deployed yet. I am bracing myself for the worst.

Re: Anyone else nervous about Pres Obama's speech tonight?
for your DH
I didn't listen lastnight...but I have heard some chatter about sending 30,000 troops.
I didn't agree with it under Bush and I don't agree with now, and I voted for Obama.
It is so frustrating.
The older I get the more I feel like it more of the same $hit...
I was such a believer in him.
And I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt with almost everything...
BUT THIS...too me is just wrong!
Why sit there and talk about how terrible the war is, how it shouldn't be going on, how you will end it etc...and then send 30,000 more troops...***!

I was very sad watching that speech and seeing all the young West Point cadets sitting there, some still in their teens with their whole life ahead of them, just very eery.

Bush took the opportunity to shift our focus from Afghanistan to Iraq when we should have finished the job in Iraq first. Obama is doing what SHOULD have been done in the first place. I am sure he does not want to send more troops over. But IMO he's doing the responsible thing. I have a friend in Afghanistan now... it's insane over there and it gets no attention, it's the forgotten war. It needs to be handled properly so we can move out without leaving a huge mess, or being stuck there forever.
ETA: From what I understand this is a decision that was made months ago, over the summer, and is only now being amde public.

Thanks everyone for your prayers. for your friend headoverheels.
DH has friends over there now, and this is very very true. They told him they have like NO support and are at times sitting ducks That is the only reason I am somewhat okay with what is going on. Hopefully it will SAVE the lives of some of the people that are there because they will have more resources.
DH will know soon what his status is. His unit just got back (he missed deployment due to training) but there is a nearby unit that is "short".

couldn't agree more.
Afghanistan (and parts of Pakistan, as well) has been home to Al Qaida, fostered by the Taliban. Let's all remember that these are the people (Taliban and AQ) who believe that we, America and the West, should all be destroyed and it is this ideology that led to the perpetration of the attacks on 9/11. If we pull out now, the Taliban will take back over that country, and it will again become an OPEN haven for terrorists who will terrorize not only the poor men, women and children of that country, but also the rest of the world.
Listen, I'm all for diplomacy and trying the peaceful route first, but when you have a self-stated enemy of the US who has declared that they will stop at nothing to kill every last one of us, time to stop playing nice and get down to business.
We might never have gotten to this point if the previous administration had kept its eye on the ball and finished the job at Tora Bora in 2001, instead of handing the reigns over to a less experienced Afghan forces (who quickly declared a cease fire with AQ) or instead of having already begun to plan to go after Iraq despite the fact that Afghanistan was still in deep turmoil.
The cadets you saw last night all signed up for this. The senior class (Class of 2010) entered the academy in the summer of 2006. As someone who went that route, I can tell you that you don't enter a military academy thinking that you'll be a part of a peace time military. There is always the possibility that you will be called upon to go to war. You are there to serve, no matter what. What a beautiful sacrifice those students are making for all of us. I think we all hope and pray that no harm will ever come to a single one of them or anyone else in the military. But they signed up for it, and we should all be grateful and support their decision to be so selfless.
This planning and debating over a plan has been going on for months. The president only made this decision in early November after careful deliberation and study of all of the available options. I know that many will be disappointed that he is sending in more troops, but when the need is there, his first priority is to keep our country safe. He clearly believes that is needed now, and I support him.

well said.
My baby sister (19) is somewhere out at Sea right now I wish her all the best but mostly I am just so PROUD of her. Her scarifice, her courage, her committment.
We all hope for a painless conflict for those we hold dear. Every single one of those involved in this war is a son/daughter, wife/husband, mom/dad, or sister/brother of someone, no matter who they fight for.

Re: Anyone else nervous about Pres Obama's speech tonight?
My BIL is in the Air Force and will probably be going there ( we won't know- his assigment is classified :(
As much as I just want ALL our troops home- especially this time of the year- I agree with what others said:
1) If Bush hadnt switched focus to Iraq ( which I believe was a distraction for the American people when "he" couldnt find BinLaden) we woudl be finished in Afghanistan now
and
2) We need to close the book on this war- we just cant leave without finishing what was started ( even if it was started by another President). And hopefully if the troops are requesting help, then it shows how Obama is willing to change his mind from his election promises and do what is best with what he now knows.
