Anyone else on here with an Asthmatic Toddler?
I am just wondering how in the world you get your child to sit still for the nebulizer. Sometimes I think that giving it to her makes her more out of breath and wheezy because she fights it so hard and wiggles all over the place.
We end up giving it to her in increments, but I wish she would get to a point where she'd just sit still for it. I've tried her favorite movies, toys, books, coloring, and she just won't stay still for the neb.

Re: Anyone else on here with an Asthmatic Toddler?
I starting giving John the nebulizer when he was 3 months. At first he was great and took it like a champ. Then he got older and it became a nightmare. I had to sit him in the highchair, put on a dvd and basically hold him down while I gave him his treatment.
Luckily now he's great about taking it again. He'll sit on my lap watch a movie and try to hold it himself

She doesn't like to sit still or be contained reguardless of what the activity, so I shouldn't be surprised that she doesn't like to sit still for the neb.
Does john need it all the time? Every day or just when he gets an attack?
Does he have an official diagnosis of asthma? Our pediatrician said that htey wouldn't put it in writing until the 3rd episode, and this makes the 2nd for us. But they are treating her as an asthmatic just because my DH has it os bad and she responds just like an asthmatic does to the treatments.

No only when he gets a cold, they seem to settle in his chest all the time. His "official" diagnosis is Reactive Airways Disease" , meaning he "may" grow out of it (I hope).
When he does have an episode its xopenex every 4 hours and prednisone 2x a day.
May I ask was she a C-section baby as well?

She was a c-section baby and did have problems with heavy, rapid breathing when she was born which they said could have been from the c-section --- since when you have a vag-birth it helps to squeeze everything (fluids) out of the lungs and so that doesn't always happen with c-section babies.
however that cleared up with 24 hours and for the past 16 months she was fine -- and we didn't think she'd have any lung problems, until about a month ago when she had a bad attack and we took her to the ER.
they aren't diagnosing her with asthma yet but treating her as if she is an asthmatic since my DH is SEVERE (he was on a respirator just this past september and is hospitalized a few times a year for his asthma) and his family has a long history of it as well.
she is actually supposed to be on pulmicort respules 2X/day as maintenance but we are having a hard time getting insurance to cover it because of issues with my health insurance and so we haven't filled the script yet since it is VERY expensive. I feel so horrible about that and I guess now after a 2nd attack (I guess I was hoping that it was a fluke thing last month) I have to just get the money to gether and fill the script.

Andrew wasn't diagnosed with asthma, but was given a nebulizer b/c of the way his colds/cough get. Anyway, we always try the mask up to our faces first (holding our breath) and then he wants to do it. Seems to work. Otherwise we take the mask part off and just hope that he breathes in most of it.

Re: Anyone else on here with an Asthmatic Toddler?
My 2.5 yr old has asthma - I didn't think it was that severe until she almost stopped breathing from strong onion fumes over the holidays We had to call the paramedics. Luckily the xopenez (via nebulizer) worked immediately and cleared out her lungs.
She's now on Singulair daily so her asthma is under better control. When she has a cold we still do the neb 3-4 a day and we don't use a mask. That would just piss her off I think! Sometimes she fights me, other times she doesn't. I just sit her on the couch with me and we watch one of her favorite shows. Even if you get them to sit still for 5 mins it's better than nothing I think.

Re: Anyone else on here with an Asthmatic Toddler?
My 22 month old has asthma. He's on Pulmacort 2x/day and xopenex as needed. He mostly takes the neb very well, but there are lots of times when we literally have to wrestle him to the ground to give it to him. He NEEDS it, so I have no problem playing WWF Wrestlemania to give it to him.

Re: Anyone else on here with an Asthmatic Toddler?
I was fortunate that when he needed it he was very cooperative. We had a cute little fish mask, so he thought it was a fun game. Would she sit still if maybe you painted her nails or toenails while you do it?
Also ask your MD for samples, they may have some they can give you while you sort out the insurance.
