Anyone else shocked that the Sirius stock has gone down?

I thought for sure with Stern it was a given but it has gone down a lot, from 7.80 to 6.40. Chat Icon
I didnt buy it, but almost did. Still wondering about it though.

Any thoughts?

I am not shocked at all.
yes stern has a fan base but there are A LOT of people against paying for radio. People in the music and radio business are starting to use thier voice a little more and voice their concerns to the american public that radio should be free.

Don't be shocked at all. Stern has already been priced in to that stock for awhile, since he announced last year. I am interested to see what the holiday numbers are because if they don't meet or exceed expectations, I see the stock dropping to $4-$5 and staying in that trading range.

I almost bought it too and DH talked me out of it. Since he's an eco/finance person I always listen to him because frankly this stuff is over my head.

I am thinking about XM or Sirius because I spend at least two hours a day commuting by car and I am lacking for enough good tunes.

Re: Anyone else shocked that the Sirius stock has gone down?

See, Im one of them, allthough I love Stern, Im not gonna run out and purchase Sirius and then Pay to listen to him. Especially when I only listen to the radio in the car for only 20 minutes each way, so for me it would be a waste of money, at least I would catch the shows on E!.
But I def thought I was in the minority with that decision, I guess the stock is proving me wrong.
thanks for your input!

I agree. It will probably go up again next week when he is on the air finally and then go down and level off.

As far as the comment about people not wanting to pay for radio and the prediction that people won't pay for it... the same was said about tv 30 years ago when cable was in its infancy.

Funny, I only know one household that does not have cable and that's my 75 year old aunt and uncle.

How many of us have cable? or satellite tv?
People who travel love satellite. You can get the same stations no matter where you are in the country.

Yes, commercial radio in many markets is feeling the pressure and they are tweeking their formats. A little bit of competition never hurt anyone.

Im hearing more and more purchase Xm more than sirius though, thats where Im confused, I know its allready built in in most vehicles and you just activate the service. ahhhhhh Im not sure, DH says no way to buying it, I would today right now in fact, but he says that stern was payed 500 mil and he is factored into the stock allready and if he doesnt make the company back what they are paying out stern may fail, but I dont see that happening? I just sold a stock to purchase this one and I am sooooooo confused. Ive been watching it and if there is a time to buy its now!

I am not too surprised. We bought over 500 shares of it about a year ago, but it was under 6 when we bought it so we are still up a little. I think once stern actually gets on there it will do much better, but what do I know lol.

I should have sold it when it went up to 7.80 and then bought it again now.

Re: Anyone else shocked that the Sirius stock has gone down?

The problem with Sirius isn't Stern and him not being on yet. That is already priced it to the stock. It won't have an effect on the stock price. The number of subscribers gained during the holiday season will have a strong impact on the stock and even that have been priced in a little. It has to do with their bottom line. They are a much younger company compared to XM and have really stretched themselves as far as the amount of money that they have contract, especially with talent. It will be years before the company is expected to make a profit.

If you are interested in either Sirius or XM, I suggest reading some of the analysts reports and getting a handle on the financials and see what the forcasts are.

We had XM and I wasnt that impressed by it that we got rid of it. See I am looking for a quick buck I guess, I know nothing about stocks and thought that with Stern going to Sirius would make a nice spike in the stocks, but I see what you mean about it being the subscribers and not Stern himself. My confusion is wh would it dip so low on the charts after the holidays? I thought for sure it was a huge holiday gift and many new subscribers? ah what do i know.

One thing you should remember about all stocks, what you are already thinking of, that will cause movement in the stock, has already been priced in to the stock. Holiday sales for Sirius have already been priced in to the stock. That is why it's trading where it is. The fair market value of the stock is only about $2.00. S&P does have a 12 month price target of $8 and a hold recommendation.

If I could figure out how to make a quick buck in the stock market, I would be very rich. Unfortunately, you can't predict movement. If you are really just looking to play a little, go to a find a stock you think has potential and buy a few hunderd shares.

Chat Icon NOT shocked at all.

XM is the better service musically and Sirius invested WAY too much cash in Howard.

They will never get out of the red.

Re: Anyone else shocked that the Sirius stock has gone down?

Stern lost a ton of commuters, a new Sirius system is supposedly coming out in July. It is suppose to be live wireless, which now Sirius does not carry, but I heard XM does.

So if you normally listened to Stern on a bus, you are out of luck. We bought that 300.00 one and returned it instantly once we realized it wasn't live. The Sirius salesman said tons of them had come back already and to check back in July when the new model comes out. So hopefully it will be on the rise again.

I think there were some end of the year profit takers too (or losses who knows) due to tax reasons.... we'll see what the new year brings - we are holding on to ours....

Thats one of the main reasons why Sirius will always trail XM. They are way behind with the hardware.

XM had the "MyFi Walkman" out last Xmas!

I figured Sirius had one out by now... but I guess not if people are saying "its not live". Well if its not live... whats the point? Chat Icon

Also... remember... Sirius will get a LOT more media attention in NYC for a few reasons. One being Howard obviously. The other is the fact that Sirius headquarters is based in Manhattan, NY while XM is located in DC.

A lot of people in NYC will take Sirius over XM... but XM has the much bigger grasp on the market nationwide.
