Anyone else with a finicky doggy? (long)
DH and I got our dog, Fergus, last August, from a shelter. He's an older dog. We'd been feeding him Newman's Own dry and Science Diet wet.
About six weeks ago Fergus stopped eating his food. He still took treats so we knew that he wasn't sick- he just began to turn up his nose at his food. We tried a few different things, each of which he'd eat for a couple days. Then he'd stop.
We don't know a lot of his history, beyond the fact that he was very neglected. We've concluded that he was fed a lot of table scraps before we had him, which we really don't like to give him. He had high liver enzymes (or something like that, not serious according to the vet) and I wonder if the table food caused it. We figure that he's realized that he's with us for keeps (which he is) and now HE'S going to call the shots about what he eats!
We've been feeding him turkey from the deli counter, but I worry that it's too much protein. Today I tried making a little "pie" with the turkey as the "crust" and then putting some Beneful in the middle. Of course, he managed to eat around the Beneful and only eat the turkey.
He will eat a little dry food when DH feeds him by hand. Anyone else have ideas? I want him to get more fiber, and less protein.
