Anyone else with a very lazy BF baby? Help!

My 2 week old son is very lazy at the breast he only takes 1 breast for like 8- 10 minutes and falls fast asleep. Nothing and I mean nothing works to wake him. He has a lot of poopy diapers and wet ones so should I be concerned or not. At his 1 week ped visit he gained 7 ozs. ughhh i am so nervous he isnt getting enough. Was or is any other baby like this? TIA

Brendan was just like this. He was always so sleepy. As long as he has enough diapers I wouldn't worry. I think that's the hardest thing about BFing. Not knowing how much they've had to eat. I worried about this all the way up until 8 months when I stopped nursing. Chat Icon Some of the things my lactation consultant had me do to get Brendan to stay awake to eat were: stripping him down to just a diaper. If they are all warm and cozy they're more likely to snooze. I also used to use a cool washcloth on his head and back and chest. You can also try stroking the bottom of his foot with some pressure and massaging the jaw right under the ear lobe-this stimulates the baby to suck. But the sleepy stage doesn't last forever. It's all a blur now, but I'd probably say the first month to 6 weeks or so. Just keep counting the diapers. If there are enough diapers the baby is getting enough to eat. It's hard, but you just have to trust it. Oh and gaining 7 oz by the first week is good! They are only expected to be back up at their birth weight by 2 weeks I think since they lose weight after birth.

My DD was the same way. I call her a bf snacker. Even now at almost 4mths old she doesn't feed for more than 10-15minutes total. As a matter of fact she's got me so used to her quick feedings that I found myself getting impatient the rare times she nurses longer than that! Chat Icon She has been consistent with her weight gain so I'm finally starting to relax about it and realize that she must be getting what she needs. As long as your son is having wet diapers and gaining weight you have nothing to worry about.

My pediatrician said that he believes babies get 85% of what they need the first 5 minutes of BFing. HTH!

Ella was always a pretty quick eater (maybe BFing for 10-15 minutes). Depending on how fast your milk is flowing (I had a very fast let down), he may be getting enough in that time (sounds like he is, since he's gaining weight).

If he's gaining weight and having enough wet diapers he is getting enough. All of my babies were lazy in the beginning.

Breastfeeding is so hard in the beginning because you really don't know how much they are getting....but what you are going through is totally normal! My son was 3.5 weeks early, so he was even more prone to falling asleep.....but as long as you have the wet and poopy diapers, and gaining weight, your baby is fine.

It does get easier!
