Anyone else's dr. want you to have a mammogram?
my dr. wants me to have one. Is this standard? I am 36 and BF for only about 4 weeks. I made an appt and the lady said I have to wait 6 months after BFing. Just wondering if anyone else had to do this.

Re: Anyone else's dr. want you to have a mammogram?
I think once you are 35 you should go for a mammogram.
Unfortunatly my sister did not do this, she felt a lump not long after her 3rd child was born, thought it was from the pregnancy, and never did anything about it until it was too late. She lost her year 1/2 battle with breast cancer at the age of 37 leaving behind 3 yound children.
Just as a safety precaution, I would get the mamo, it can't hurt.

Re: Anyone else's dr. want you to have a mammogram?
Most docs like to start getting them at 35, if for nothing else, just to have a baseline to compare later ones against. I have to go for one also as I am 37. I too was told that I have to wait until 6 months after I've stopped BFing. This is my month to go.

I am so sorry I am going as soon as I stop breastfeeding.

My dr did this is the fall and they found something that he never felt. I went for a sono and then a biopsy but thank God it was nothing!!!

Re: Anyone else's dr. want you to have a mammogram?
I am 31 and my mom had breast cancer at 36 and is still living. My Dr. told me to come in after I'm done breast feeding but to wait six months. So I will be in six months from April for my 1st one.

Re: Anyone else's dr. want you to have a mammogram?
I am a mammo tech, and it doesnt hurt to start at 35. Every Dr. is different, some want their patients to start at 35, some say 40. If you have any family history I would def go at 35. I am 31 and i am having my baseline done this month. I just found out my mother had breast cancer ( I was only 8 when she died). All this time I thought it was lung cancer but a family member informed me I was wrong.
So, the rule is.. If your mother had breast cancer you should get your mammo 10 yrs before the age she was when diagnosed. Since my mother died at 46, and she had a lump but do not know how old she was when she first found that lump, I am having mine done now at 31 for precautionary reasons.
And yes, you must wait 6 months when breast feeding is involved. Good luck.. i'm sure you will be fine..
