Anyone ever have a mole removed for cosmetic reasons?
Do I go right to a surgeon? I know my ins. won't cover it because they don't need to come off but I don't like them, never have and I do worry even though I am careful. I already went to a derm because I thought I needed a "baseline" because they have changed. He was totally condescending and made me feel like an idiot so I don't want to go back there.
So what do I do? Thanks!

Re: Anyone ever have a mole removed for cosmetic reasons?
I am pretty sure mole removal is always covered. They are all considered potentially dangerous, I guess. I had a mole removed between my toes, so it was obviously not cosmetic, but I have been paranoid about it and kept on thinking that it was getting bigger. Had it removed and of course it was completely fine, but insurance covered it anyway.
Find a new dermatologist and talk to him. I think it all depends on how he presents the matter to the insurance company. Perhaps walking in and saying that you want to remove a mole because you think it's ugly is not going to work well but saying that you are concerned about it will!

you need to find a new dermatologist. what a jerk!
i have a large birthmark on my leg. when i was in HS, i had my derm write a letter to my insurance that i needed laser surgery to remove it because it *could* become cancerous in the future (which he said was highly unlikely but there was a slight chance). i had it done.
you DO need a baseline done. that's hugely important, especially if they have changed. skin cancer can grow quickly. your derm is an idiot, sorry.

I agree...any mole that is removed should be covered.

Find a new dermatologist! They can remove it for you right in the office. I recently had 2 moles removed to be biopsied, which turned out to be melanoma, so now I need to see a surgeon to remove all the cancerous tissue, but you don't need to see a surgeon if you just want the mole removed.

Re: Anyone ever have a mole removed for cosmetic reasons?
I had this done last year with a birthmark on my face. I went to a facial plastic surgeon who removed it and had it biopsied. The insurance wouldn't pay until the biopsy came back because they would only cover the removal if it was cancerous or precancerous, and it was neither.

Re: Anyone ever have a mole removed for cosmetic reasons?
I had one removed. It was strictly for cosmetic purposes - the derm basically told me just looking at it that it was benign and had NO chance of ever being anything else- based on the kind of mole it was. However, it was done right in his office and it was covered by insurance. He coded it as such that it was suscpicious or whatever and they paid in full...

My dermatologist always removes them. There was one on the back of my neck that was not "suspicious looking" but since it got in the way of brushing my hair and necklaces they were able to write it off. He's done that with other moles I didnt like either..made some story up or said it looked suspicious.

Re: Anyone ever have a mole removed for cosmetic reasons?
If the mole is on your face, I would have a plastic surgeon remove it. My mom had one removed from her nose by a dermotologist and now she has a dent at the bridge. My MIL, on the other hand, went to a plastic surgeon to have something removed from her nose and you couldn't even tell. Just my experience.

I had 2 removed for cosmetic reasons. The insurance wouldn't pay for them. I paid $75 for each mole. One grew back....very annoying. The dermatologist did it right in her office in less than a minute.

Re: Anyone ever have a mole removed for cosmetic reasons?
i told my dermatologist it was bleeding so my dermatologist sent me to a dermatological surgeon. it was a big mole on my nose. i hated it. by going to a derm surgeon, there is barely any scar.
