Anyone ever kick their pets out of their bed after years of them sleeping there?
I feel horrible but I just want the bed to myself, well ourselves. My chihuahua is 9 and my italian greyhound is 3. Both have slept in bed with us since day 1. I started getting really fed up and frustrated with them when I was nearing the end of my last pregnancy and they were making it even harder then it already was for me to sleep. Since having the baby nothing has changed. The one has to sleep right between me and DH and the other growls every time you happen to touch him (only when he's in our bed). I want them out but I cant bring myself to do it because in the end the guilt wins. It's not like they would be sleeping on cold bare floors or anything, they have warm plush dog beds that they sleep in during the day.
Am I crazy?

Re: Anyone ever kick their pets out of their bed after years of them sleeping there?
This is us here.
My dog(s) definitely effect our sleep at night. My DH wants to stop letting them in simply for this reason. I actually love having them sleep in our bed, although they definitely give us a horrible night sleep that negatively effects us. And I feel too guilty. They love us. They truly love sleeping with us and I love them snuggling up to us.
Hey, it's sort of the same as my DD is sleeping in our bed. She gives us such a horrible night sleep and hurts us, kicks, lays sideways, etc....but I feel bad saying no sometimes.
So as for the dogs, they are still coming in, mainly due to me refusing to say no.
Some nights it's the FIVE of us in our bed...DH, me, DD, and our 2 dogs.

We actually didn't let Ozzie start sleeping in our bed for precisely this reason - we didn't want him to get used to it and then have to kick him out when we had kids. He gets to sleep in the bed only as a treat (which usually means when Mommy or Daddy isn't home at bed time and the other one is lonely )
I think you just need to be firm with them....maybe put them in another room because if they are in YOUR room they will just jump up on the bed. Like any training, be consistent and stick with it and hopefully it will get easier.

I'm having the opposite problem! We never let them sleep with us, but on their dog beds next to us...
Then we got a king size bed...and they've been 'sneaking' up in the middle of the night on DH's side of the bed...he doesn't feel them & and there's so much room that I don't know. I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and kick them off...and when I wake up, they're back. I love my dogs, but I hate having dog hair in my sheets!
But in your case...I would feel guilty too, but if its making you crazy then try to phase them out...

I joke that I havent slept well for nearly 10 years because that is when I started letting my dog sleep in my bed. But I honestly couldnt stop him now.

I hated having them in the bed! I was so cramped for years. 2 50 pound dogs my dh and me in a queen. We got a king and i dont even care anymore. My Dh and the dogs on one side and me on the other. My dogs dont shed much and we have a duvet cover that I wash ever week with the sheets so the only issue we had was the room.

Re: Anyone ever kick their pets out of their bed after years of them sleeping there?
We don't let our dog or cat sleep with us anymore. Our dog did until recently because she's only a few years old and when our older dog jack was still alive he slept with us every night. Zoe the younger dog got in the habit too but she loves to be outside and she's always dirty from digging so she is banned from the bed. The cat is allowed in the bed with me if DH isn't there but he kicks him out when he comes to bed. The dog and cat usually sleep together in our guest bed t night It wasn't easy to kick her out but we sleep better and she's fine.

Re: Anyone ever kick their pets out of their bed after years of them sleeping there?
My dogs slept in my bed for 5 years, then I split with my ex and knew if I ever moved in with my now FH, that wouldn't fly. I was able to break the habit in 2 nights. I said goodnight and left them downstairs when I went to bed. Felt terrible but I slept sooo much better after that. I had to go down a few times the first two nights bc I hear them crying/barking, told them it was ok and went back to bed. They have been fine sleeping alone ever since. I think it's truly harder for us then them. Good luck! :)
