anyone ever move an oil burner? or switch from oil to gas?
our oil burner is in the worst possible spot. we want to move it and assume it will be expensive but have no clue how expensive.
our other option is to possibly switch to gas since keyspan has deals. will they remove my oil burner? would they put the new gas burner in the spot i want?
anyone ever do either of these things?

We converted from oil to gas - it is expensive. Also, you have to see if there is a gas line near your home - sometimes they won't do it if none of your neighbors have gas b/c it's too difficult for them. I want to say - with the cost of the new hot water tank, gas burner and plumber - the conversion cost a little under $10K. FYI - the plumber removed the oil tank.

I don't think to move the burner would be THAT expensive - certainly not as expensive as switching to gas!

Try this thread: Click me!
You could FM some of the girls who researched it and did the conversion.
There was a thread on this board sometime in Dec, I think, with someone postng what they did and how much it cost with each detail. You might want to try a search.

I'm not trying to start any drama here, but, if you are not aware of this, you and any one else who is thinking of switching, should be. Keyspan is being bought out by a British based company. While they are saying that rates are not going to go up, there are legislators who are trying to stop this buyout because they are stating that gas rates will rise dramatically and, eventually, become more expensive than oil. Just make sure you do your research. However, everyone I know who has gas prefers it to oil. It burns cleaner and you don't have to depend on oil deliveries. Good luck in whatever you decide.

This is only for natural gas though right? We have propane and the prices have been pretty steady for the past 3 years or so.

I was only talking about Keyspan and natural gas. Propane is a different story.

we switched from oil to gas a few months ago and it was the best thing we did! It is so much quieter, cleaner, no maintenance. And the bills are pretty much the same!

thanks for all the comments.
we have had one person in so far and his estimate isn't terrible, so we're going to call a few more places and see what they say.

Re: anyone ever move an oil burner? or switch from oil to gas?
I inquired about the cost of bringing gas into our home because I wanted to switch from an electric to a gas stove. Their reply was that the nearest gas main was 642 feet away and it would cost $34,444.10 just to extend the main. Love how they had to take it right down to the last ten cents!
