Anyone familiar with ADHD
My son is almost 6 and is being screened for ADHD . It breaks my heart but it could be worse. Even thoug I am a special ed teacher this is hard to grasp. Does anyone here know of anyone else going thorugh this? I have alot of questions. Thanks - Shari

My dd is ADHD and was diagnosed at the age of 6 too even though the preschool teacher thought she might be at 4.

Re: Anyone familiar with ADHD
My son has ADHD (9). Although he's not hyperactive and I sometimes wish they would just say ADD. He's on medication for it and has been since kindergarten, which helps tremendously.

Re: Anyone familiar with ADHD
Sammy is NOT hyperactive in school. He is restless and impulsive and does not focus though. He is not retaining information because of this.
At home however he is very hyperactive

:raising hand:
It took a long time for us to get to the point, but we've opted to medicate - with a huge amount of success.
FM me if you have any questions. I know it's a tough choice, but once it's started to affect their self esteem, etc, I suspect you'll get there too.

Re: Anyone familiar with ADHD
My eldest daughter has her problems and is treated for ADHD on top of all her other issues..in my daughters case medication was/is the only answer...
My neighbors so was just diagnosed and they are going through the process with the school district etc...
My DH is a special ed teacher too. If my DH didnt have the answer to any of her questions he was able to find the answers from people that he works with. Maybe try networking within your workplace..

Re: Anyone familiar with ADHD
I also have a Q if I may piggyback on but I think it will help. Can anyone who has been through the process share what services their school district gave them with a diagnosis?

Re: Anyone familiar with ADHD
Thanks everyone. sdammy's CSE is April 8th. I am hoping for general ed with support services if they have it . East Meadow schools do not have resource room for 1 st grade. I really do not want Sam in a self contained class since they do not have it in our home school.

If your child needs resource room, they should create it.
Good luck!
I can't tell you how many things we have had to create in our school because a child needs it. If your son needs it then demand it!!!
As teachers, it's always hard for us to be on the other side.

Re: Anyone familiar with ADHD
I was diagnosed with it as a child.... and took Ritalin for quite a while.
I can tell u that when I was medicated was the only time that I felt I could follow the teachers properly and without issue.

It's a class that is made up of :children that all have special needs , and there is a special education teacher as well as an aide. There are variations of the ratios (i.e. 15:1:1, 12:1:1, 8:1:1).
