anyone familiar with the elmont school district (stewart manor resident)
I grew up in Elmont (covert ave elementary) and went to sewanhaka HS. SM kids go to SM K-6 and Sewanhaka 7-12. If you gave a more specific question you can FM me if you'd like!!

I was just wondering how it compared to other nassau county school districts. Is there a site with rankings?
Thanks

I would never send my kids there.
I have no idea about the teachers but I worked with the student population and there are a lot of problems in those schools. They are overwhelmed and there is a higher-than-normal incidence of gang activity, delinquency, and truancy in that school district.

I had such a different experience there just a few years ago! I thought the classes were excellent at Sewanhaka High School, and I was really impressed.
Which particular school are you talking about?
ETA: I'm honestly just curious. I am definitely not interested in starting a school district war!

The Elmont elementary SD is a very large district with a LOT of different diversites in income, race, family dynamic, religion and parental involvement in education. There are a few of the elementary that are not as well off as others IMO.
The Sewanhaka HS district which encompasses an even larger area that includes Elmont (the heart of it as well as the "better" outskirts of town) Floral Park, Stewart Manor, New Hyde Park, Garden City Park and Franklin Square also has a HUGE range of income levels, race, family dynamics, religions and parental involvement.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but to COMPLETELY over generalize about an entire district as large as it is based on one experience is a little much IMHO. There are gangs in "better" school districts, as well as rampant drug problems in some of the higher rated districts in the county.
Out of curiousity, what school did you work with the students. If it is EM, then I definitely agree with you more. If its SHS I can see it, but not as extreme as your comment comes off.
To the OP: When we were looking at school districts I liked greatschool.net. it gave recent test scores, community dynamics, spending per pupil, as well as other facts. I also researched the individual district websites to look at extra curricular activities offered (sports and clubs), classes offered at the HS level (AP classes, special unique classes, occupational education classes) my DD was 12 when we moved into our district, and looked at the pictures of students to get an overall vibe about the district.

I grew up in Floral Park near Sewanhaka. My parents wouldn't send us to school there. It has gotten worse since them. There is often police there. The gang issue is very real. Kids on my block went and they all survived but said if they had to do it again they would have begged to go elsewhere. Most of the kids in Stewart Manor go to private school.

JAAMS, I totally agree with you! The district as a whole gets SUCH a bad rap!! I know parents that have their kids there now, as well as recent (less then 5years graduates) and they all are smart well rounded kids. Specifically SHS I am speaking of. Not to make excuses but sometimes there's a cop car there because they are doing crossing guard duty!!
Floral park kids go to FPM even if you live across the street from SHS (I knew someone who did and had to get an exception from the district in either 9th or 10th to go to SHS) there is the exception for a few periods a day if you're in an occupational ed course (architecture, automotive, etc)

Yes! Everyone I know who went there is doing well. To the best of my knowledge, SHS has a number of programs that many other high schools do not. I'm glad I'm not the only person in the world who has a positive opinion of SHS!
