Anyone find a pet new home because of DC?
I would like to preface with:
PLEASE DO NOT FLAME
If you did...
Who took the pet (stranger, family, etc)? What kind of pet? Did you have an interview process? Any questions in particular you thought were important to ask? If a stranger took the pet how did you find them? Did you charge money?

Re: Anyone find a pet new home because of DC?
opinions aside, I hope everything works out for you and the pet
ETA - PLEASE make sure you give them to a good home, ask them if they have a vet, a fenced in yard, where the animal will sleep, etc

Yes, I did when my second DC was born. My JRT was becoming too much to handle and nipping at my dd's face and hands. We were lucky as my BIL, who used to live with us and bought our old house, took him. He's much better now and he's very comfortable.

I had to get rid of our cat when Caden was born. She was very aggressive and simply couldnt be trusted....
Fortunitely she was very unusual looking so it was easy to find a home for her.
We just started mentioning to people and eventually we found someone to take her in.

We actually haven't even decided to go down that road yet. We still feel we have other options to explore first. However, I would like to try to educate myself with this option as well.

Chelsea has a scar on her face from the dog I had when she was a baby. He bit her face, a millimeter higher and she would have lost her eye.
I found a great family to take him with 3 older children. He was very happy with them.
I know the guilt from the bite was probably 10 times worse than the guilt of giving the dog up. However, how did you deal with the guilt of finding him a new home?

Re: Anyone find a pet new home because of DC?
i gotta say, and i dont care if i get flamed or not..i LOVED my cat..totally adored him...he leaves me dd alone so that isnt a problem, but since shes born he terrorizes me because he doesnt get the same attention..i have come to HATE having him..he gets into everything, he tears things apart..he is so freakin territorial its ridiculous..he thinks i was his wife and i left him or something..i WISH i could give him up..but id never ever hear the end of it from ds, and id feel too guilty..
i am jealous of you though lol if you are able to go that route

Re: Anyone find a pet new home because of DC?
I would like some info on this as well. We have 4 cats and the youngest has become unpredictable around Kaydyn. She's already scratched her twice and swatted at her a bunch of time with claws.
We are currently asking around to friends/family to see if anyone will take her in.
I still want to make sure she goes to a good home and we'll try all our friends/family before trying strangers.

Re: Anyone find a pet new home because of DC?
I was this close to rehoming my cats, when one of them got sick and died. It was a terrible thing for us, but it was the best outcome of a bad situation...I miss her, but my life is so much easier. My remaining cat has completely changed and now spends most of his time outside...
I was going to put notices up in the vets office, but also I asked friends. Good luck!!!

We just had to rehome our cat last week bc my son has SEVERE allergies, not just a runny nose, but so bad his eyes actually swell shut.
Who took the pet (stranger, family, etc)? A friend of a friend What kind of pet? 4 year old Cat Did you have an interview process? We spoke a few times, but since she was a good friend of one of my good friends, I trusted my said friends judgement Any questions in particular you thought were important to ask? A lot pertaining to, would he be allowed full reign of the house, on the furniture, I dont believe in declawing, so I wanted to make sure they wouldnt declaw, that kind of thing. Did you charge money? No, however, if it were NOT a friend of someone I knew, I would have bc people adopt animals all the time that are free to use in fights and such, a nominal fee usually turns off people looking for animals for that reason.

Re: Anyone find a pet new home because of DC?
The catalyst for my divorce was the fact that my ex's dog bit Amber in the face. I wanted the dog gone (since it showed aggressive tendencies towards her previously) and he didn't see it as a big deal. The dog was his priority; my daughter is mine. Now that the dog only see's her a few times a week, it's calmed down considerably. But I had no thoughts about getting rid of it after it bit my child. And this was a dog that I nursed back from the brink of death many times. It didn't matter. My child comes 1st.

Re: Anyone find a pet new home because of DC?
I did not, but my BFF did.
They had two dogs who they had rescued, the younger one never really adjusted. It was terribly hard on my BFF, but they gave her away to a co-worker who had recently lost her dog.
DH and I were going to take Oliver actually, but they decided on her co-worker so that they could vist him.

Re: Anyone find a pet new home because of DC?
this is a constant arguement between me and FH
we have two cats, 4 yrs old. one a tabby and shes THE BEST cat ever, wouldnt harm a mouse. the other - a calico with the classic calico attitude. i love her (Chloe) SOOO much as she's my FIRST baby and I've had her since 6 weeks old. However, she CANT be trusted. Shell walk over to you, longing for attention. Shell rub up against you and as soon as you pet her she swats or attempts to bite! We deal with it because we can "read" her and its not a CONSTANT thing - she CAN be sweet. It's tough, im afraid she'll hurt the baby but I cant even think of giving her up. I know she wouldnt be labled "adoptable" and my family knows how she is.
we're thinking of declawing but im not sure itd be enough

Re: Anyone find a pet new home because of DC?
We decided to find a new home for our cats (2) after DD was born. They had behavioral problems after she was born that they didn't have prior to her arrival. We tried to make it work, it didn't, and living in the basement wasn't a good life for them.
It took a few months, but we worked with our vet's office and they helped us place them together. We paid a lot of money for them to have the vet's seal of approval (ie- up to date on all shots and tests run to prove they were healthy, etc., plus boarding at the vets for people to see them). After a few weeks they were both placed with a nice older couple with no children that the vet recommended.
Now that DS is here and I have a 19 month old and a 12 day old, I couldn't imagine also have to care for the 2 cats given their behavior.
