Anyone flip-flop a room, because they envisioned somewhere else?

Again on the topic of remodeling with my mom...I was telling my mom, how I would like to move the living room space (its a Ranch-where the most people have it, in the front of the house and its shares/joins the space with the dining room), I'm thinking of having it in the back of the house. My DH wants a nice TV and there's no room where the "traditional" space and there's more room back there.

My mom freaked out I could you have your living room in the back of the house, that's the room you have to walk into!

I should have been an interior designer! Acutally I thought about being one when I was younger, but I got discourageChat Iconand thought I'll just decorate my house when that time comes. Now I'm watching all this HGTV - I love it and I'm getting so many ideas, but then my mom comes a long and bursts my ideas.

Anyone flip-flop a room, because they envisioned somewhere else? Does this sound like a bad idea or weird?

you do what YOU want to YOUR house... there are no "rules" to follow, except when you're gearing up to sell your house... otherwise, in my book, the rule is you make the house exactly the way YOU want... don't let your mom discourage you! Let me tell you, my husband and I have remodeled two homes now, and each time my mother questions me on our decisions... and each time the house came out BEAUTIFULLY... my realtor was so impressed with our renovations that she sent her entire office over to our house to take a look... with our new house, we had an open floor plan between the sunken living room and dining room... I thought it was too expansive, and I wanted something more "cozy" so DH and I decided to put up a wall with connecting french doors... I can't even tell you the resistance I got from everyone - my mother, our realtor, everyone! And in the end, it looks amazing and we've received a gazillion compliments on it, including from my mother..

So, the point - some people just can't and won't think outside the box and don't have the creativity to imagine how something could look... ignore them!

Do what works for you!!

We made the "family room" into a dining room and made the "living room/dining room" one large family room.

Yes.. We took the room that was supposed to be the dining room and made it into the living room and the room that was a living room into a dining room. It was just a better fit for us and we got a lot of these looks at first Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
But when everyone saw it they all agreed it made sense and was much better this way.

I had a hard time convincing DH of it but now he loves it!
