Anyone following Joey Feek and her cancer battle?
Reading the updates and seeing the pictures are just crushing.
Especially this one with her daughter
And this line from her husband in reference to her family helping out while she is in Hospice
… not waiting for someone we love to die. But helping the woman we all love to live.
This Life I Live

I didn't know who she was so I looked her up. How horribly sad this story is. I feel so bad for her, her DH, and her little girl. How heartbreaking it must be to watch someone you love slip away like this. So very sad.

I've been following, heartbreaking. The other day he wrote"Feeling broken-hearted and blessed ... watching my beautiful bride pour a lifetime of love into a few minutes each day" I think she might be getting close

Really?? That seems like a terrible step backwards.
But regardless she has come out and said that at 40 years old she really never had a gynecological exam. They're so important for catching these cancers early.

If you have had no abnormal cells in your pap, yes, the new guideline is 3 years.

Maybe it depends on your insurance, mine is EVERY year. Every single year at my annual with the OB/GYN I get a pap, 100% covered by insurance. I've never heard of a pap being done every few years, that is crazy! I'd pay OOP if that were the case to have it done every year.
ETA - I've NEVER had abnormal cells either.

I agree, this seems absolutely crazy to me. You could have cancer growing in your body undetected for 2+ years. I wonder if they think these tests are truly unnecessary, or if it's a way to save a buck.

Mine is 100% covered every year. I'm sure it depends on the insurance company though. I've been following their story for a short while now. Something showed up on my FB newsfeed a couple of months back and I've been following since. I remember watching that first season of can you duet with them on it. So heartbreaking!

Anyone following Joey Feek and her cancer battle?
Mine is every year as well however if it wasn't I would absolutely pay out of pocket for one. So so sad and scary. Even scarier is the amount of women who do not go and get exams on a regular basis. My MIL hasn't been to the OB/GYN since she gave birth to my SIL almost 38 years ago. Crazy!!

Anyone following Joey Feek and her cancer battle?
Wow, 3 years seems like a long time. I've had precancerous cells removed, so I go every 6 months. But the not knowing would kill me.

Re: Anyone following Joey Feek and her cancer battle?
I am obsessed with her story and I don't know anything about her, it just popped up in my newsfeed on FB at some point
Re: the change in pap guidelines, I think, and I'm not looking this up but recalling a convo I had with my OB a few years ago.. I think they changed it to less frequently because the PAP only checks for cervical cancer and 99.9999% of cervical cancer are caused by HPV (and possibly other STDs?) so if you are "low risk" (Aka not sexually active or in a monogamous relationship) you don't need it done that often.
Someone feel free to research and correct me

You are right that a pap screens for cervical cancer, not other kinds of reproductive cancers.
I am not sure on the stat though of HPV being the cause of 99.99% of all cervical cancer. i know there is definitely a bigger risk of cervical cancer with HPV, but not sure of the percentage

Re: Anyone following Joey Feek and her cancer battle?
What an incredibly beautiful family. It's so heartbreaking to read through his posts, but also so inspiring to see how they're dealing with it all.
I've literally had to stop reading through about 6 different times because I was sobbing. I truly hope that when she passes her family is able to find peace with it.

Anyone following Joey Feek and her cancer battle?
Re the new pap guidelines-I don't know the percentages off the top of my head but yes, the majority of cervical cancers are caused by certain strains of HPV. Something like 75% of the population will have HPV at some point in their lifetime and the vast, VAST majority will not get cervical cancer. This lead to over-treatment of abnormal paps- HPV is usually harmless and goes away on it's own.
Furthermore, cervical cancer is: a. not very common and b. almost always very slow growing.
But yes, this is very sad.
