Anyone give birth at LIJ?
I think I posted this awhile back but don't think anyone responded. Has anyone given birth at LIJ? What was your experience like? I am scheduled to go any day now.............DH and I also decided we are not going to shell out the $$$ for the "private room" so if anyone who was in a similar boat can comment on that as well, I'd appreciate it. TIA!

Re: Anyone give birth at LIJ?
My cousin gave birth there a few yrs ago. I hate to tell you her first experience was horrible, she was in a room with 3 other girls and was miserable, so for her second child they paid for a private room and were much happier. That's all I know though, sorry.

In Great Neck/Manhasset? If so, I did. I shared a room. It was tight I am not going to lie. I wish I could have afforded a private room! They ended up not having any after my parents offered to buy one for me (I was in so much pain and I shared a room with a 16 year old who's b-friend stayed up all night listening to rap music
After she left my other roommates were very nice, just it was tight.

Aren't they supposed to kick out visitors after a certain time? I WILL totally make a big stink if I get stuck with THAT situation..........

That is the same hospital I was in. It was the babies father and they are allowed to stay. My DH stayed the first night.

Really? They told me on the tour that the father has to leave I think by 11PM at the latest unless of course you have a private room? That's total BS. Sorry you went through that!! Here's hoping things have changed for the better!

Unless it changed, there was no problem with him staying over, they didn't even bat an eyelash.

Well, it does make me feel better at least that they will most likely let DH stay then the first night. How long did they keep you in there for? Did you have a V or CS birth? TIA!

Re: Anyone give birth at LIJ?
I gave birth at LIJ in 2005 and 2007 so my experience is dated but I will share anyway.
With DS#1 (April 2005), I did not have a private room. I had a roommate the first night. She left the next day so the second night I had a private room for free. My roommate was pleasant. No issues. This was a two person room on the Fourth Floor.
With DS#2 (April 2007), I paid for a private room. After giving birth they stuck me in a former triage room and told me this would be my room. I was not happy about staying in a room with 3 other women. In addition, my bed was right next to the bathroom which you can imagine was not pleasant for women post-partum. As soon as I was told that this was my room, I asked for a private room. I gave birth at 3:00AM so I had to wait until 10:00 for a private room. The private room was worth every penny. I only stayed one night since this was my second and I was antsy to get home.
I think that it is worth mentioning that you don't get your own bathroom with a private room.

Re: Anyone give birth at LIJ?
I had my boys in 2005 and had a great experience there. I was given a private room, I didn't even ask for it, not sure if it was because I had twins and a c-section but I was also not on the regular floor since my boys were in the NICU.
I do know that they were stickers with the amount and length of visitors and I had a private room, I wanted to have more people in and they would not let them come in.
I found the nurses great and helpful. Good Luck!!!

I stayed 4 nights, I had a CS. I had a some complications as I think 3 nights is the norm for a CS.

Re: Anyone give birth at LIJ?
I was there for three nights, one in labor and 2 in recovery.
I was not thrilled with LIJ and will never give birth there again if I can help it; - no space in the recovery rooms - recovery room nurses were not very attentive. I had an unused IV port still in me when I was being discharged. I asked several times for it to be removed. - shared room with 3 other moms will never do again. too many visitors, too many post-partum women using one bathroom and not enough cleaning staff. (I was way skeeved, I never took a shower there; partly because the port in my arm and because it was disgusting most of the time.)
The good part was the doctors were fairly informative and the LC was awesome.

Re: Anyone give birth at LIJ?
I gave birth after laboring via emergency c-section at LIJ on Lakeville Road. I would never have a baby anywhere else. Abby needed to go to the NICU and having Schneider Children Hospital there was more important to me than the room in recovery. Abby received top notch care there. It has a reputation for a reason. You should never need this place but having it there allows you to breathe that much better.
I did not find the recovery process all that horrible. Yeah it was a little tight, but you aren't there very long. The recovery room nurse evaluated our situation and decided it was 100% necessary for me to be in a private room at no additional cost to us. It was a life saver. Ask any NICU parent how hard it is to see and hear all of the other mom's with their babies in their rooms. All you want is privacy and the comfort of having your DH with you whenever you need him. That was the case. DH was there either as late as he could stay or over night for 4 nights.
Again, I would never have a baby anywhere else.
ETA: The rooms are first come, first served with 2 in a room. If the 2 person rooms are filled, you get a 4 person room unless you pay separately for the private rooms.
Also, though it will be too late for you (and for my second as I am hoping to have a second soon), LIJ is in the midst of construction of a Women's Health Pavillion that will be devoted to maternity as well as other things. Something to think about for the future and other kids.

Re: Anyone give birth at LIJ?
I did twice and I did buck up twice for the private room as well! I had a fine experience--no complaints at all. The only thing I thought was a bit odd was that they don't serve you breakfast in your room. There's a "breakfast buffet" out in the hall. You can tell all the other c-section moms by their bent over shuffles as they pick out their bagels.

Yeah, that was brutal though I am sure they want you to get up and move around. Oh and when you go for the buffet, grab as many hard boiled eggs as you can. They go fast.

Re: Anyone give birth at LIJ?
Hi ladies! I just wanted to bump this thread to say that I felt I had a great experience at LIJ. ALL of the nursing staff and residents were absolutely amazing, nice and extremely supportive.
I was placed in a 4-person room, but that first night, it was just 2 of us in there. The next afternoon another woman came in. Honestly, I was so involved with the baby/getting checked out/my family/friends visiting that a lot of the "issues" I felt would bug me did not phase me.
The early morning of my last day (around 4-ish) another girl was brought into our room and the residents visited us starting around that time which was a bit annoying, but I woke up to visit with and showered. I knew I was going home in a few hours anyways so it didn't really bug me too much.
Again, thanks so much for your feedback. I think the fear of the unknown got to me prior to giving birth, but if I ever decide to have children again, I know I am in great hands at this place!!!

Re: Anyone give birth at LIJ?
I gave birth there in Aug 2007. I was in a room for 4 people. 1st night, 4 of us, it was miserable. 2nd night, I was alone, bliss. Last night they brought someone in after 11pm and she snored louder than anyone I've ever heard, it was scary. I was cuddling DD while she slept after I nursed her and I had to send her back to the nursery because it was jolting her out of sleep. I feel bad for this lady's DH and kids. It wasn't awful, they were VERY busy and overflowing with patients. Beg for a double over a quad if you can.
I'll be using a different hospital next time around but I would be ok with it if I had to go back to LIJ.

The private rooms were something like $500/night in 2007!
Glad you had a good experience mzsocialworker!
ETA: That's an out of pocket price!

Re: Anyone give birth at LIJ?
At the tour, the NP said they are around $700.00 a night and are on a first come/first serve basis.
