Anyone had an hsg?

So I finally started to go to a fertility doctor and next week I am scheduled for an hsg, has anyone had one done? Does it hurt? Just nervous about it that's all...

I actually just had one done two weeks ago. It didn't hurt, it was just uncomfortable. You just feel pressure and some cramping but as soon as it's over it goes away. It's pretty quick too, maybe 15 minutes. I also didn't have any blockage so I'm not sure if it's painful if you do. No need to be nervous, it's really nothing. Good luck!

I had one last week. I would suggest taking a motrin or advil about an hour before the procedure.. the cramping only lasts as they are putting the dye in and a little after but if you just lay still and take deep breaths than you should get through it ok. Also.. bring a pad with you.. they give you one but it's the cheap hospital kind. lol..

Just an FYI - you'll get a better response on the Infertility board.

Everyone is different. I had an HSG and it hurt...a lot! Just major cramping, and only for about a half hour. Then I walked to the subway and went home, no problem. And then 2 weeks later I had a BFP. I'd have done it 100 times for my DS.

It will only hurt if you have a blocked tube. Other wise if feels like a period cramp for like a second. Its kinda like having a papsmear. then they take some pics. its pretty quick.

Not true. I didn't have any blockages and I had major cramping.

I had no blockages either and this was the worst test for me. I did not take anything beforehand for pain though. I had this test done many moons ago and I remember telling the doctor that if this is what childbirth feels like then I want the stork to bring a baby instead lol. But I was fine right it was over. Everyone is different I guess but its not a pleasant test to say the least.

The actual procedure wasn't painful at all, it was like getting a pap. I did experience a bit of cramping once they inserted the dye. But my recovery that night was horrible. It took me 2 days to feel somewhat normal again

It was uncomfortable and odd lol. The strange part for me was them moving me around to get different pictures. I also had three people in the room...the doctor, a nurse and a student watching...so that was a little weird. I felt normal right away and was able to go to work right after.

Not for me! I didn't have any blocked tubes and it hurt! Luckily it didn't last long. Good luck!

So the hurting really comes with cramping, not when they insert the catheter thing? I was thinking it might hurt going through the cervix?

yes, I would say so. Some pressure, like a pap and maybe when the dr pushes the dye/fluid through. I was told the cramping a few days later was bc everything was manipulated. you can take some advil or tyl prior

Re: Anyone had an hsg?

I have had it done twice.

The first time hurt and I had a blocked tube. It was intense pain. Ugh.

2nd time I took a pain killer and no more blocked tube and felt fine.

Good luck

Re: Anyone had an hsg?

I had it done and it wasn't that bad at all. I think I took a couple of advil's before. Two weeks later I got my BFP with my DS. It was well worth it!

Anyone had an hsg?

the first time i had it done i just had minor cramps while they inserted the catheter. i went to work, took advil and i was fine. that was before i had my DD. since so much time has passed, they required another one before i could start fertility meds again and this time the pain and cramping were really bad during the procedure! but again, i took advil and it went away eventually. neither time did i have any tubes blocked.

Re: Anyone had an hsg?

I know this is an old post, but I figured I'd respond being it came up in a search...just in case someone is looking at this post later on.

The test didn't hurt me at all. Just a little uncomfortable with the pressure. I followed the advise I read on here about taking some Advil beforehand and that might have helped. I had no blockage, etc. Everything was normal.

I did experience...or shall I say am still experiencing headaches. I had the test on Friday & here it is Monday & I still have a headache. Did anyone else experience this?

I love reading the posts that babies appeared after the test...hoping it is our month!

So I had one, last week. Like the pp said, just pressure when they inserted the clasp!? down there but other than that it was ok. They did find a "block" but suggested it may have been a spasm. I had no pain at all. Forgot to take meds.. and I was fine.

I just got back from one. Doesn't hurt at all. You feel them pull on your cervix, but that is it. I also do not have any cramping now either. Good Luck!
