anyone have a baby who was/is tongue-tied?
I took the baby to his first pediatrican visit today and the Dr told me that he is "tongue-tied". This is when the bottom of the tongue is attached to the floor of the mouth (in my DS case it is by a tiny thin piece of skin)...this is why he has been having trouble latching on when we attempt to breastfeed!! Dr told me it would be take a very simple procedure to correct done by a ENT specialist that is painless for the baby. It isnt always necessary to correct, but if not corrected it could affect his speech in the future. DH and I are pretty sure that we will have the procedure done...we are meeting with the ENT dr next week.
Anyone have any experience with this? What did u decide to do about it?

Re: anyone have a baby who was/is tongue-tied?
Noah was tongue tied, he had his fenulum snipped on top and also beneath his tongue. I went to see a specialist in Garden City who I recommend 100%. She is practically doing this service for free as she feels so strongly about it. I went to see her with my parents and my husband and she looked at all of our tongues, and lo and behold, my dad has the same kind of tongue tie that Noah had.
I had his tongue and frenulum snipped as I know it can lead to speech and dental problems in the future. The procedure took maybe a minute and Noah was back to his normal self within maybe an hour. I can't find this doctors name, but FM me and I will have a further look for it. I got hooked up to her through an LC in Massapequa.

I was and got it corrected when I was an adult. I totally recommend doing it when the baby is as small as possible.

Yes, my DS is tongue tied (I was also when I was a bay...it is hereditary). They used to cut them in the hospital when you were born (which is what they did to me), but they dont do that now. My ped. said not to cut it until it becomes an apparent problem b/c they dont always need to cut them. They will only cut it if it becomes a problem with either feeding or speech.

Jack is tongue tied. At his two month appt. (which is in two weeks) we will then make an appt. to have it snipped. I heard it was a two second procedure so I'm not that worried about it anymore. In my head I am comparing it to a little girl who gets her ears pierced.
ETA: I am def. getting it snipped after doing some research about it. It could lead to future speech problems and I would rather get it taken care of while he's a baby - then to see if it would correct itself. My ped didn't even give me that option.

my friends daughter was tongue tied... I think they did the procedure when she was 1 or 2.. she was talking already and once she had the procedure big difference.. other people who weren't with her daily could understand her afterwards. Now she won't stop talking at age 8.

Re: anyone have a baby who was/is tongue-tied?
DD had it and Ped did the procedure right in the hospital for us the day she was born. but I was told after that she is one of a very few drs who will do it themselves and right there and then. I have the same thing but it never caused me any problem. No speech impediment, etc. But it was my first time BFing and I wanted to avoid a problem with DD if possible. lo and behold still had a million Bfing issues anyway, oh well.
