Re: Anyone have a breast MRI?
My mom gets one every year in March. She usually gets the results in 4-7 days after depending on what day she has it done (always seems to have it done on a friday and nothing gets done sat or sun).
She also has the reports sent to her gyno, her oncologist, her gp, and her breast surgeon.. so whoever gets them first calls her.
Hope everything is ok!!

Re: Anyone have a breast MRI?
me too. They just called me for some history since I've had surgeries before. I almost passed out my heart was beating out of my chest.
Please tell me that's normal for them to need this info and everything is normal.

When did you have it done? Why did you have it done? Where have your surgeries been that it would have mattered?

Re: Anyone have a breast MRI?
I've had a breast reduction, scar revision and an abnormality removed that was stage 0. I had the mammo in May and it was negative. The Oncologist just wanted me to have an MRI because I'm higher risk than the rest of the population because of the abnormality. Also, I may be undergoing IVF and the hormones could exacerbate any pre-cancerous cells that happen to be hanging around.
So the doctors agreed that I should have a breast MRI to make sure nothing is brewing.

Re: Anyone have a breast MRI?
I'm sure that they just needed background information on your surgeries as part of the normal information they gather. I don't think it's a sign that your results are problematic.

now why couldn't DH just say that to me??
Men...ppffft!
I'm trying to talk myself off the ledge. After all, I had a normal mammo, I've been examined, self examined..etc..I know it's still possible but I have that sick feeling in my stomach about it.
They literally only had my records from 2005 when I had the abnormality removed. They knew nothing of my reductions and the scar revision and the most current mammo.
I guess they just needed the whole picture for the report. That's the logical thing. Now, if I could only talk myself off the ledge.
The radiologist must have seen all of the surgery scars and said wth?

My mom goes every 6 months for mammos and also gets MRIs every once in a while (she's a survivor). I completely understand that, no matter how "routine" it is for you when you're high risk, it never FEELS that way. I completely understand why you are freaked out -- but I don't think it's a bad sign at all. I think it's information they needed to interpret your tests the right way. Seems to me it's a sign that they are being thorough.
Good luck. Try not to be too worried, though I know that's easier said than done.

Re: Anyone have a breast MRI?
thanks Kara. I'm glad they are being thorough. After all, they could just look at all of the scarring and calcifications..etc.. and say nothing without investigating.
Heck if something is there, I want to know and get it taken care of. I'm thinking that if there is something there it would be very early as well.
eta: they are going out to my doctors to get the reports about what was done and the pathology. I know that sounds routine, but for me it's panic time.

Re: Anyone have a breast MRI?
ok, from what you just described, it sounds like they prob saw some scar tissue and wanted to update your history since it wasn't in their file. I know it's not so easy, but try not to worry. My mom literally bugs out every March when she has her MRI and Sonogram (she's a 2 time survivor). It's very stressful, but I'm sure you're fine. If they were worried, your dr would have called you, not the lab tech.

Re: Anyone have a breast MRI?
thanks Brooke. Sorry to hear about your mom. Glad she is a survivor. I'm very very happy for her.
I guess you're right. If they would have seen something they would have called the doctor directly and not even bothered asking me for info. They had the doctor who sent the script in is the oncologist. They could have called him directly. I can't help but worry of course.
Kara, your mom too. I'm thrilled that she is a survivor. That is why early detection saves lives.
I also think the radiologist is one smart cookie. She saw my films, saw some history sent over but knew there was more to the story. Current mammo and past pathology reports. She may even say in the report that due to the past problems she recommends MRI annually or whenever they do it.
I didn't bring films with me. No one asked me about history or anything. There was a tiny little line on the papers I filled out for past surgeries. Also, on the forms it asked me about reduction or other breast surgeries but didn't give room for info.

Re: Anyone have a breast MRI?
I heard from the asst to my doc. She left me a message. She said it was perfectly normal for the radiologist to ask for all that and not to worry about it. It will take a while to get the results. She said don't panic. She sent them the info they requested.

Re: Anyone have a breast MRI?
I get breast MRIs and mammos every year because I have the BRCA-1 gene mutation. I'm in a study at NYU.
Anyway, they ask you about the past surgeries for background info so they can see if any abnormailties correlate to any past surgeries (rather than being a suspicious growth). Totally normal. I know it's scary, but try not to freak! I usually hear back about a week later.

EXACTLY! surgical scars LOOK like CANCER on an MRI or mammogram.
i had a lump removed from my breast (non-cancerous thank god, but my mom had Stage 4 breast cancer, so i said, get rid of it!) and i had to then have a second mammo. and sono. so they could have a baseline with the scar tissue. Then subsequent tests are compared to the first post-surgery reports.
i have a wonderful breast surgeon shoudl you ever need....

Re: Anyone have a breast MRI?
thanks, I have a breast surgeon. I hope I don't need one but you better believe if they find something that's even questionable, it's gone!
The doc's asst said that it takes a while to get the results from this radiology place. It's North Shore Diagnostic. They are of the better places that do breast MRIs I'm told.
We want them to be thorough. The mammo was fine so hopefully, this will be too.
Then I get to have them every year.

Re: Anyone have a breast MRI?
If you did not have any markers placed during any of your surgeries they are probably comparing incision and scar sites to what they are seeing on the MRI

Re: Anyone have a breast MRI?
i have breast mri's every year, mammo's every year and sonogram every 6 months since i am 25, i am now 32. my mom was diagnosed with end stage breast cancer when she had just turned 30 and unfortunately lost her battle. so my docs watch me like a hawk. i know i usually wait a few days to get my MRI results. as far as my breast doc tells me, MRI's are the BEST way of detecting breast cancer
