Anyone have a Christmas Village?

I was thinking of starting a new tradition with DH this Christmas, our first as husband and wife.

We both like the idea of starting a Christmas Village, something like this:

External Image

But the pieces we really like, the Department 56 village pieces, are fairly pricey. We're on a budget and only want to buy one piece, to start.

Does anyone collect these, and have a good place to get them? Maybe a few past-year's models are cheaper?

I know I could try the Limited Edition on Sunrise Highway, I'm not sure how their prices are.

Re: Anyone have a Christmas Village?

Garden World in Franklin Square had them 50% off for the past year models. They were gorgeous. I'm not sure if there's much left, but it's worth checking out.

We have 2 actually - one that I started a few years ago when I was single, and then I inherited my MIL's whose is much nicer. You can find some good stuff at outlet xmas stores. Also end of season sales at places like Fortunoff.

Re: Anyone have a Christmas Village?

We have one, this is last years pic which I didnt get to put up too many because we had just finished our den before hte holidays.
I probably have about 30 houses, but I inherited them when my mom passed. Ours is the Dept 56 North Pole village.

Check on Ebay, I remember my mom saying there were people selling on there for alot less than she paid for hers.

ETA: Let me know which village you like...even with all the houses I have, I am always looking for them on sale!1

Re: Anyone have a Christmas Village?

I wanted to get this started last year, then saw the prices - I may just get a couple each year and eventually have a village

Re: Anyone have a Christmas Village?

We collect Department 56. It's not cheap, but the best place to get them is at Fortunoff's on the day after Christmas. They are all 50% off, it is a madhouse, but you can get so many. We also shop at many of the Hallmark stores after Christmas. Also, they were just bought by Lenox so check out the Lenox Outlet store in Tanger.

Re: Anyone have a Christmas Village?

Well, I showed my DH some of the other pieces and he whined that he wanted it to be the Department56 villages.

So today I looked up a few auctions on eBay and found the fire station, it was really cute! I never realized what a high you can get from frenzied bidding in the last minute of the auction... I tried my best but I lost! By a dollar in the last 10 seconds! Chat Icon

I was ******. And more determined than ever.

So I found another village piece I liked:

External Image

And decided to do it right this time, and bid $12.50 in the last minute of the auction. And I won!! Chat IconChat IconChat Icon

Even with shipping & insurance, it is 1/3 the price of the new pieces I was finding online. Chat Icon

Now I just have to stop myself from becoming an ebay whore. Chat Icon

Thanks everyone!!

Re: Anyone have a Christmas Village?

My mom used to order them from the 7th avenue catalog. She has an AMAZING village that took up ha;lf the living room, but she hasn't done it in years. She really spent a lot of time on it and did an amazing job.

FH last year started a Disney village for me, and got me these gorgeous pieces, including the castle, fire department, etc, etc. Chat Icon

GArden World also has a lot!

Re: Anyone have a Christmas Village?

I emailed Garden World last night to see what they had left, and if they were still on sale.

They have Halloween villages too, did you know that? I'm sure they're not as popular though.

I'm sure he'll do an amazing one for Christmas this year....but if I were you I'd check on the pieces soon!

Re: Anyone have a Christmas Village?

I started one on a whim like five years ago. I walked into a store after Christmas and they had all these pieces for more than half-off and people were going crazy for them and I got caught up in it . I fell in love with I don't even remember which Department 56 collection, but I bought like ten pieces that day. I have not taken it out of the attic once. But some day I will.

We have the Simpson's Christmas Village ! Chat Icon
My mom has an amazing collection, and they do such a nice job setting it up!
Ours is a young collection, but we get a piece or 2 for Christmas each year from my parents- that's an idea!
External Image

My mom buys all of hers from the Red Sled in Port Jeff- I am sur ethey are more $$, but the store is just charming, and it's kind of a tradition of hers. Plus she likes to support the local businesses.

ETA- My mom does NOT have the Simpsons Village- she has the good stuff!

That's where I get mine, too. During the season you can get them on sale for 50% off. I have a few so I usually just wait until after the holidays for the 75% off. But I bought them at 50% off when I started collecting them.

DH had a Dept. 56 collection before we met and when we met we decided we would add one piece each year. They are expensive that is why we only buy one.
