Anyone have a digital SLR camera?

if so, what brand do you have and it is really that much better than an advanced digital camera?

Re: Anyone have a digital SLR camera?

they are that much better. The best ones to go with are the Canon SLR or a Nikon...those are the camera people.

The salesperson at best buy said this: if you want a camera to take great pics that you'll have for 10 years....go for a SLR. It's quality is amazing (see any pics taking by princessmaris or nrthshrgrl). If you want to get into photography as a hobby/business on the side....SLR.
If you want a point and shoot go for a regular digital or an advanced digital (the zoom is higher on the more advanced ones like the Isis)

I was going to get one, but couldn't afford it. But it will be my next one.

thanks for your feedback.

My DH really wants one. He has a film SLR that he used on his many trips to Europe. I was looking into the Nikon D50, but it's only 6.1 megapixels. Chat Icon

Re: Anyone have a digital SLR camera?

I just got the Canon Powershot A630 8 mp. it's awesome. not an SLR or advanced digital, but it's been taking great pics so far and has GREAT features. I find Canon to be very user friendly.

hope that helps!

What kind of lens does he have for his SLR? Whatever kind of digital SLR you go for make sure the lens is compatible if you plan to use them. When I bought my Nikon D70, I saved a lot of money because I have the 300mm lens.

As long as you stick with Nikon or Canon, you'll be fine. My camera is a 6.1 megpixel which means i can print up to a 20x30 shooting on the highest memory option. I don't know how much larger you'd want to print something.

The digital SLRs are absolutely a MUCH better camera than any digital camera out there.

No shutter delay, no waiting for a camera to turn on...

There are a slew of posts on here about digital camera with sites for reviews (dpreview.com) and price shopping (go B&H)

I have a Canon Eos 350D and its FANTASTIC. I am a total amateur photographer and only use it on the auto setting, but the pictures it takes are fantastic and the speed is brilliant. If you have a big memory card you can shoot hundreds of shots and you are destined to get some wonderful shots out of all those!

I say buy one. NOW. Go. Why are you still here? The shops are still open.

I have a digital SLR - the Nikon D50 and love it! I have two lenses for it, a 28-80 mm and a 70-300 mm.

Re: Anyone have a digital SLR camera?

It's like the difference between a 35mm point and shoot and 35mm SLR. You get better pics, MUCH more versatility...and unless you're printing posters, you don't need more than the 6.1 MP.

I have the Nikon N80 as my 35mm SLR, so I would get a Nikon digi to use the same lenses and accessories.

B&H is great, but remember they are closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays.

Neptune is good, but I have a major gripe with them. They told me I was getting a $300 rebate on my camera and then when Nikon rejected it, they told me they never told me that. meanwhile I only spent as much as I did, counting ont he rebate! Chat Icon and their prices are high!

)I have a Canon Rebel XT (350D) and I love it. I am also an amateur and really need to learn how to use it to its potential, but it is so fast I am no longer missing shots.

Quality is great, 8.2 mp, and I was using it out of the box.
Another plus is all my lenses from my regular Canon SLR fit the digital.
It came with 18-55, I had 28-80 and an 80-200. (my FIL told me there is a slight difference in mm when you use the old SLR lenses with the digital but nothing this amateur can notice

Re: Anyone have a digital SLR camera?

After figuring out that photography wasn't just an occasionaly hobby for us, we researched Nikons & Canons and purchased a Nikon D70.

Digital SLR's are the next step up above "point and shoot" but they also cost more. I wouldn't recommend them if you're not going to swap lenses. Or if you're going to leave it on auto and not learn about changing f-stops, shutter speeds, white balance, ISO, etc. Everyone wants bigger and better but if you don't use all the features, there's really no point to it and you're just wasting your money.

Once you get to about 6 megapixels, the average person will not be able to tell the difference between a 6, a 7, an 8. It's all about enlarging and most people won't go above an 8x10 or 11x17. For that, a 6mp is fine.

Ditto on B&H, I buy most all my photography equipment from them online. Haven't had a problem with them yet.

Good luck! Chat Icon

they start at around $700, give or take. for the kind professional photographers use, they go into the several thousand $ range. the photog for our wedding was telling us about the new camera he had just bought when we booked him. I looked it up online when we got home and it was $5500 Chat Icon

I just had a discussion with somebody about the SLR just last night. They said all this! Also, BH is the best place to go.

Definitely that much better. We have the Nikon D70 and really love it and I know I'll love it even more if I learn to use something other than Auto.
