Anyone have a handicap placard for their child?

My friend has a child with autism and when I went to her house I noticed the handicap placard hanging from her car mirror. I asked her and she said her ped signed off because he is a wanderer and when she is alone with him and her daughter it helps a lot. Just wondering if I should inquire with my Ped. My son is tough at times and when I am alone with all three kids it proves very difficult to go anywhere. Maybe if I could park closer it would help. I wouldn't use it unless necessary.

Re: Anyone have a handicap placard for their child?

Just my personal opinion--- I dislike it.... My husband is physically disabled and I would be really mad if I found someone with a child in a handicap spot just because they are hard to handle.. My friend who has a child with severe autism also agrees with me.. It isn't the same type of handicap IMO... I have had issues while trying to get my PDD-NOS and SPD child out of the car and into a store.. I could never use a handicap permit for that reason..

Don't get me wrong, I understand how hard it can be for anyone to have a child with autism or other developmental issues, but I don't think it requires a handicap parking permit... JMO....No FLAMES

Re: Anyone have a handicap placard for their child?

I have one, just got it it for when we went to Disney. It was a lifesaver because we stayed off disney and rented a car.
I will only use it when Im alone with Chris and his twin brother and there is no close parking. Chris has no awareness when it comes to safety in parking lots. Christopher will just run if I dont hold his hand. So I think in MY OPINION it is worth it because my son's safety come FIRST, and it is NOT that I cant handle him, it is just the way it is. We are teaching him this at school and at home.

Thanks for the opinions.

I agree that my son's safety is my first priority. Sadly, most people I see APPEAR to be fine and have the placard. I'm sure it gets abused on a regular basis, but I don't plan to if I get one.

I agree with you my husband is in a wheelchair and can only park where there is room to drop the side door ramp. So he can't park in a regular space and i can't move the vehicle because he drives from his chair. parking can be a challange at times.

Re: Anyone have a handicap placard for their child?

We have one also but I use it only in large parking lots where I know we will have a really difficult time getting from the car to the door.

Example.....

DS has ZERO concept of danger. He has no words to express how badly he wants or does not want to go into the store or place we happen to be at. And god forbid he DOES get away from me, he will bolt. Not look. Fast. Anywhere away from me. Having the placard allows me to be as close to the door as possible and my son will have less of a chance of getting away from me before we leave the danger of the parking lot. While I understand that a wheelchair is a visible and necessary tool for some people with a disability, I am my son's 'wheelchair'. He simply can NOT cross a parking lot safely without me. And having that placard is necessary for us.
Once he sees sliding doors (the mechanical, automatic ones) that is where he bolts to.

Any time I use the placard I am always concerned I'm going to get questioned and it's an awful feeling to think I'll have to defend using something that is such a helpful tool to us just because his disability isn't visible. Chat Icon

We have one but rarely use it anymore. My DS had a walker for about a year so it made it easier for us to get in and out of stores ect. He now can walk but does fall down often and has low stamina. If we are going to the mall or a large parking lot I usually use the handicapped spot, but if I can get somewhat close I save it for someone else. My DS is has CP and also has no concept of danger. My only benefit is that he is unable to run.

Not the same thing, but I always have that feeling when we fly and ask for the blue card, or go to Disney and get a guest assistance card. People tend to associate disability with physical ones only.

Sooo many people have hidden disabilities, so I wouldn't even think twice if I saw a seemingly able bodied person parking in handicap. You just never know!

I get what you are saying, but I am curious how old/big your friend's child is. I don't have a placard and am not planning on getting one, but my son is a runner and is VERY strong for a 5 year old. Right now, I am able to hold his hand and contain him, but he doesn't always grasp the concept of safety and if at 10-12 years old I think I could use a placard for his (and my) safety, I would definitely consider having one.

I have a friend who uses a wheelchair and have been in situations with her where it was very difficult to get in and out of the car so I understand why some people might not agree with getting one for an autistic child. But when it's your child's safety in question, people may reconsider. Like anything else, it can be abused, but it's nice to know that it is something available if you need it.

He's 12 and 5'7 already. My friend is only 5'2 and he's a runner. He has no concept of safety either.

My friends daughter is nine now. She was a non walker up until she was four. They had the opportunity to get a pass but turned it down. My son is three and he also has no fear. He goes right from my car to his stroller. I don't give him a chance to run off... I can't believe how fast he is... Recently it has been extremely hard to find handicap spots. Usually when I have to take hubby somewhere, I have to drop him at the front door and then go and find a spot somewhere else. I have to take ds with me. It is not easy juggling the two of them. Hubby has been staying home on a lot of our outings because he sees how hard it is for me some days.
